I also assume we would learn how these empires managed to survive and how some of the things they used to do are still used like political ideas or clothes or tools. Also as to how they have impacted cultures today. 
Another expectation is to learn about wars and how they effected the countries involved and what lessons other countries learned from it. Also how these wars might've discriminated against certain groups.
Also learn about how countries would deal with colonization and how that has effected these countries today.
