The Grand Canal connected north and south China. It was created in the Sui Dynasty and expanded by successive dynasties. The canal made it possible to bring supplies from the south to support the army and the government in the north. The construction of the waterway came at a high human cost, and hastened the fall of the short-lived Sui dynasty. The Sui dynasty was followed by the Tang dynasty. The Grand Canal helped goods circulate in China. It contributed enormously to the prosperity of the Tang dynasty. Tang China was also involved in international trade. The Silk Road was an important overland trading route. Trade was also conducted by sea. The high demand and large scale production of Chinese goods brought merchants from Africa, the Middle East, India, and rest of Asia to the great Tang port city of Guangzhou.
