The interaction with their new environment helps them become familiar with movement through sucking, grasping, looking, and listening. Can be broken down into 3 sections known as the primary circular, secondary circular and tertiary sections.

Primary circular: Accidentally doing a movement/occurrence or coordinating sensation leading to intentionally redoing it.

Secondary circular: Doing a certain action with effort with an intention and becoming more object-oriented.

Tertiary: Known as the “trial-and-error” stage where kids begin to experiment with their actions to see what reaction results from them.
