Reviewed by: Syed Jamil
Summary

Allegiant is the third book in the Divergent trilogy. The book starts off by going back on the end of the previous book, Insurgent: an experiment of genetic engineering is revealed as the cause behind the five human factions that controlled Chicago. These factions are known as the Amity, The Abnegation, The Candor, The Dauntless, and the Erudite. Now, the factionless masses have risen up to take control of Chicago in a faction war, and those who used to belong to factions rebelled against their government leader, Evelyn, mother of Tris (Beatrice) Prior's love interest, Tobias (Four). As a result Tris, Tobias, and their friends set out on a mission to unravel the world beyond the city limits. During their expedition, the group finds themselves at the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, a government agency supposedly working to fix the genetic damage that has been a problem in the United States for many years. The Bureau's leader, David, tells Tris and Tobias that Chicago was merely one of many experiments aimed to cure this problem of genetic damage.

They are told that the term Divergent simply means that someone possesses cured genes, and they realize that their entire livelihood has been nothing but a lie. Tris and Tobias must come to terms with life outside the city while deciding for themselves whether or not the Bureau is an evil organization. Eventually, when the city is on the verge of an all-out war between Evelyn and the Allegiant, Tris and her friends must act to stop the Bureau from resetting the memories of everyone in the experiment.

For starters, I liked many parts of the this novel: The plot, the characters, the scenes, the science fiction, and Veronica Roth’s creativity. However, the aspect of the novel that I was most awed by was the ending because it was heartbreaking as the way to which Tris went through all circumstances, no matter how severe, to rescue her one and only true love, Tobias.

Secondly, although most people believe that this novel isn’t one of the best, I believe that this was one of Veronica Roth’s most creative and ethical work of art and literature because of the level of depth and real-time experiences revealed throughout.

Lastly, this novel reminded me of the time when I was born because similar to factionless, my mother had not one single brother, only five sisters….until I was born. Only then, was the first male child introduced into my grandparent’s family tree. It was my birth that brought forth the light and success of my mother’s family. Without me, the whole family chain would break apart(not now since I have a younger brother and sister but still my brother won’t have a big brother to look up to; the same goes for my sister although she still has my younger brother; still, the main foundation of these chains will be broken). As a part of this family, it is my duty and honor to ensure success and let failure not be an option.

I chose this book cover because in my opinion, I believe that this best resembles the entire novel. I believe this because as seen in the cover, Tris is looking out toward the sky, revealing that there countless other options to overcome the obstacles faced within life. In addition, the leaves in the sky portray that there is hope for everyone in that they will no longer have to face tyranny from Evelyn.

This novel is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in sci-fi. One who is interested in the action and thrills in exploring the mysteries hidden within certain boundaries would be greatly interested in reading this work of literature by Veronica Roth. I would also recommend this book to anyone that has read Insurgent as this novel starts off in the instance where Insurgent has ended.. Reading this novel would further enhance their prior knowledge of what they already knew after reading either of the two novels.

I believe that this song best resembles the entire divergent trilogy as a whole because this song directly correlates to Tris, the protagonist in the trilogy. This relates to Tris in that this song relates to her "divergence", meaning that as a result of the initiations(tests), she has been categorized into multiple factions. This kept her away from her life since she were to live under multiple circumstances. Also, the phrase "Welcome to the New Age" signifies that the past should be disregarded and most of the focus should be put toward the future. As depicted in the cover, it's clear that Tris believes all hope wasn't lost. All in all, the song "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons is the one and only song that is able to fully represent the complexity within the Divergent trilogy.
