  • Motion sensors

Notes from the critical walkthrough: 

  • Possible to use different artist to create their unique light installation. 
  • Make sure we have the temporal aspect in mind, use it. Maybe our focus will be on bringing people to the museum in low season, when it is dark outside. 
  • A challenge for us will be contextualising. We have to make sure the light shows are in context to the museum, the buildings and the history. 
  • 3D mapping could be an inspiration for us. 

Next step for us will be to make a design of the experience. To make our idea visual, maybe a Moodboard. 

How do we put all these ideas together.

The mood boards were based on are discussions around bringing the areas to life with both lifting the historical but also to create an experience that makes the visitor feel something, happy, cozy, etc.

This session also made us think of how to make these ideas interactive. Threw the project we have had discussions that we wanted to use motion sensors so the visitor doesn't have to create the experience instead they will be given it. However, we still want the experience to be interactive. We talked a little bit about motion-generated power or just giving the visitor a hint of light in the interactive buildings and when they come closer the whole light show goes off.

We talked about using some kind of body motion to activate the lights. It could be using a saw, knocking on the door. We ended up choosing to implement footsteps to the idea. The light show would go off by someone standing on a box with two footsteps to activate the light show. The box would be visible by being lighted. It should also be heated in some way so it is visible even if there is snow. It was a challenge in that way that the information that we were handed about the museum and their requests was very limited. It gave us the freedom to use our imagination but in the beginning it also felt a bit overwhelming. Even though we have the opportunity to be curious on a lot of parts of the museum, bevause of the timeframe we quite quickly had to narrow the project down and decide on what kind of concept we wanted to move forward with. This of course effected the outcome of this project.

With that said, even though we early in the project decided to focus on lights we are very happy with the idea and the feedback we got at presentation was positive. 

Another aspect on the fact that we were provided with limited information and the character of the project, that it was more of an inspirational project. As I said this made it possible to be very liberated when imagining what we wanted to create but it also made us forget about costs and some limitations the the museum had. As an example we were not reached by the information that the museum want the outdoor are to be experienced exactly as it were back in the days. This information would as an example change our idea completely. Because we didn’t think of budget or engineering our conceptual idea was maybe not realistic for the Västerbottens museum. This we knew and our goal was to spark the idea of what can be done by lights and som of our ideas was more “doable” than others. In hindsight I wish that we had found a better balance between staying more close to the limitations of the client but also let the imagination free. Because I still like that we went big and there are a lot of ideas in our conceptual idea that can be implemented already today.
