For my mindmap, I wanted to focus on the ideologies for education. The three people we have discussed so far are Howard Gardner, Diana Laufenberg, and Mike Rose. In my opinion, all of their views on the framework of education go hand in hand with one another.
I wanted to show how many of the ideologies all connect with the point that ideologies of education should constantly be changing.
For example, the blue arrows that I have added show the connections between the three. All three of them are surrounded around the idea that we need innovative learning. They all emphasize that students all learn and progress differently, therefore the "standard" educational framework we have in place now, may not work for all students. Experimental learning/ teaching was mentioned by all of them as well, and in order for that to happen they all also focus on the students. The chart shows that Gardner focuses on a disciplined mind where students are persistent in finding ways to better their education. This connects with Laufenberg's and Rose's idea of listening to the student body to find out ways to be innovative.

Over the past four weeks, we have read and viewed many important chapters and videos regarding education. Therefore, the overarching word that connects to every individual point is education. Branching off from that, I chose to include the three individuals we studied and defined education in their own, important ways. From those three individuals, I chose to look at the topics I found most important from each. Gardner’s Five Minds for the Future categorizes the unique ways our minds work. According to Gardner, each of these minds are crucial for the future. The disciplined mind has a specific scholarly discipline, craft, or profession and marches to his own tune. For example, the creating mind puts forth new ideas, poses unfamiliar questions, creates a new way of thinking, and arrives at unexpected answers. The respectful mind welcomes differences between individuals and groups, tries to understand everyone, and works effectively with them. Therefore, I connected the respectful mind to Mike Rose’s ideas of assets and deficits. The respectful mind is able to welcome all differences including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, nationality, ableness, and others. Each of these factors influences our limitations, our intelligence, our expectations, our future, and so much more. When considering all of these different elements that make up our education, Diane Laufenberg’s idea is that it is essential for children to learn from their mistakes. In doing so, we show students that is ok to be wrong and that we can learn from our mistakes. Therefore, I connected her ideas to the creating mind, which tells us that unique thinking answers unexpected questions. For example, sitting a child down and making them take a test eliminates any and all thought processes for creativity and curiosity. Each of these individuals is considering the best ways in which children learn and how they can be their best possible selves.

For this assignment, I made a mindmap between some of the major ideas that each person has shared between the content we've explored during this class. I wanted to show how a lot of their idea may be very similar. Although the might be worded slightly different, what they are saying stems from the same understanding about the education system and how it might be needing reform. All of the ideologist for education state in some way that class affects the way a person learns and is treated in the current education system and we need to focus on adjusting it to each student. Au and Laufenberg have the idea that students should be immersed into the real world. Rose shares that every student has potential and they just need encouragement from someone like a teacher. This is like how Au explains that minds can be encouraged to be more productive. More of these connections can be seen through the purple lines and arrows that connect all of the ideas from the three people.

For my mind map, I wrote down key points from each source. I then found common themes among them. Wayne Au, Diana Laufenberg, and Mike Rose all share similar values regarding the education system. They are all advocating of equity based learning, not measuring by what they know, but more how the students can apply what they know. Laufenberg focuses mainly on how mistakes can actually benefit the student in the learning process, so long as they can learn from them (why one solution didn't work, but another did). Au focuses on critical consciousness, or how problem solving skills are important in the classroom, as well as outside of it. Rose focuses on how different people have different experiences outside the classroom, but that should not determine the quality of education they receive. All of these ways of thinking ultimately connect under the umbrella term of equity. Helping individual students with their individual needs, rather than treating every student as if they all learn the exact same way, or come from the exact same backgrounds.

For my mind map, I chose to lay out the ideas that each person, Wayne Au, Diane Laufenberg, and Mike Rose shared. They each brought different broad ideas to the table, but did bring up a few similar issues. I decided to take a big issue brought up by each of them, found in the light orange rectangles, and further explain them with either what the same person or the two others also shared. Each idea is also labelled with the main people sharing it.

My main idea was centered in how to improve schooling and the education system as a whole. Wayne Au spoke to changing larger society to help bridge the gap between students in that way. Diane Laufenberg spoke about her efforts to alter the testing and activities done in school. Finally, Mike Rose mentioned how we often dismiss a student while missing their potential. As you will see, each of these are connected to how this can be changed or a further explanation of how this happens. These connections work to connect the ideas of the other speakers on these bigger topics, as well. For example, under Mike Rose's idea regarding unseen potential, I connected how Wayne Au shared that general testing is not a fair showing of a student's knowledge. This is a way for a students potential to remain hidden. There was a good amount of both individual ideas and overlapping ones among them.

As I analyzed these three people's ideas and thoughts, I saw how many of them share similar thoughts on the education system. I noticed how Wayne Au thinks it is important for teachers to have no bias with students so they can consciously think, how standardized tests is not right, and how every student should be able to have their needs met. Diana Laufenberg believes in students being able to be independent and using their voices inside and out of the classroom to learn, how it is extremely important that failure is not looked at as a bad thing, and the importance of learning through opportunity and experience. They all believe strongly that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Whether this means that a child get extra help when needed or not. This is a very strong and important idea. Starting off with Wayne Au he focused on the importance of equality among students to help them succeed in the classroom. Basic needs such as food, shelter, health care are the starting points to having a good academic performance. Mike Rose focuses on a similar thought that all students should have equal opportunities to succeed. He also addresses that students have more ability than people think. My mind map has several keywords and phrases that from Au’s Deep Consciousness, Diane Laufenberg Learning from Mistakes Video, and Mike Roses’ Literacy Narrative. Diane Laufenberg’s students fail and embracing it, and the culture of one right answer. She looks down on standardized testing and multiple choice questions because she doesn’t like the idea of just one right answer. This made me think of Au’s Deep Consciousness. Wayne Au is a professor, writer, and editor. He also does not believe in standardized testing and thinks they are symbolic of what is wrong with education which I put into my mind map. Additionally Au believes in critical consciousness and that teachers and students are often hyper-alienated from education. Au talks about fairness and that standardized testing makes treating everyone fairly and equally impossible. When Au talked about fairness it made me think of Mike Rose’s literacy narrative. Mike Rose emphasized the fact that students are extremely capable and have ability and potential that we just don’t see. He also talks about how bad tests scores are seen as intellectual failures which is not the case. Additionally, Rose discusses how we should treat students equally which connects to Au’s idea of fairness. Overall, I thought these three people all had similar ideas and connected in many ways.

For my Mind Map I thought about my understanding of each author. Anytime I think of Howard Gardner, the five types of mind immediately come to my thoughts. I think they are crucial and in some sense can be related to anything. For Diana Laufenberg I think about how she mentions students engagement and how it is crucial to learn from your mistakes. I liked how she emphasized it’s ok to make mistakes but it is important you learn and improve from them. Then I added the value of modernized teaching whether that be technological or the ways a teacher approaches their students. Lastly, for Mike Rose I really took away from him the importance of education to all and how everyone deserves not only an opportunity but it has to be equal. Also how grades don’t necessarily represent student so a teacher should be able to do some adaptive modernized teaching and find ways to grade students besides using standardized tests.

They all are reaching towards the common goal of individuals getting the most out of their education but they all propose different ways. Gardner focuses on the ideas of 5 minds and that in learning how to expand and open these minds to reach our best, most successful self. Laufenberg, takes the approach of learning through failure and experimenting. It is through failure where you sometimes learn your best lessons and can help you open your mind in new ways. With this Mindmap I wanted to show how Rose, Laufenberg and Au think and feel about the education system and what things they are working on improving. With Au and Laufenberg they share the same love for less standardized tests. They don’t want students to be a product of the education system with definitive correct and incorrect answers. They want education to be more creative and include outside the box ways of teaching. They don’t want students to strictly read from textbooks and follow lesson plans, their learning can be more interactive and opinions can be shared. Rose also mentioned testing. He believes that getting a bad score shouldn’t mean intellectual failure. There’s much more to a student and how smart they are than a score that they get on a standardized test. This goes along with Laufenberg’s teaching style. If standardized tests are going to determine if students are smart and successful in school then students will turn out like robots. There needs to be individuality and things that differ one student from another. Every student has their own strengths and weaknesses, their strengths and creativity should be encouraged and brought out in school. This will make students more heard and make them feel important. Laufenberg prioritizes accepting failure and using it as a teaching moment. She wants her students voices to be heard. Au wants to make school a healthy learning environment for all. He doesn’t want less fortunate students' lives at home, like housing, food and medical care, to affect students education experiences. He wants to make sure that no matter what all students are treated fairly. This is the same with Rose, he said that there are biases against students which needs to be stopped. He is basically saying that you don’t know students' backgrounds and what’s going on in their lives but they all deserve an equal chance at getting the best education. After analyzing these texts and videos it’s clear to see that Rose, Laufenberg and Au all want the best for students and want to make education a better, more fair experience for all.

Both Wayne, Mike and Diana all focus on standardized testing and how it's hurtful to the education of the students. They believe that these tests don't show the full potential of a student, and want other options for them to show their growth. Diana strongly agrees with having the students voices and opinions heard. And Wayne and Mike believe that each student should get a second chance to improve and grow academically to achieve their strengths. They all believe that failure is a step to improving and that all students no matter what race should be given the equal amount of learning. All these people connect easily within the topic of education, they want students to improve academically and to be taught in the classroom right. Just as Mike Rose said, he wants teachers to connect with their students and teach them in ways differently to better their understands. Teachers are striking due to public education issues and lack of pay. Issues in regards to public education is that standardized testing is not best fit for all students. That being said, there is also social inequalities that can contribute to some students excelling more academically compared to others. This connects to Mike Rose's literacy narrative because he also talks about the people who struggle the most academically who also face social inequalities as the ones who have the most potential. Because of their differences and being "flawed", they have different uses of language and can see perspectives in a different way, even if it might not be right. These students are the one's who have the most personal growth through literacy. Lastly, Dianne Laufenberg talks about how education as a whole is constantly changing and where you can learn information from. Dianne also talks about how the more you fail, the more you learn and retain and that you need to test things out in order to learn the best. To connect all 3 of their beliefs, they all preface that we each must learn from our mistakes, mistakes allow for human growth, and it's good to reflect on our mistakes.

Diana Laufenberg focuses on learning from mistakes and reforming and modernizing education. Mike Rose focuses on the effect of what being inside the classroom can do to someone outside of the classroom. AU focuses on how to fix things through deeper understanding and problem solving skills. All of these ideas somehow interconnect with each other inside the classroom or not, and it's a big flag that education can affect people as individuals and as a group, but not just as "students", but as people.

Laufenberg, Rose, and Au all had similar theories pertaining to the conflicts in the education system. To my understanding, the general consensus was that students were treated unfairly; which raises a myriad of concerns. Mike Rose focused on the external factors that could contribute to a lack of success in schools, which primarily stems from components outside of the classroom. His theory introduced the idea that these factors could hinder, and lead to a lack of self-confidence in education. When paired with the problems within the classroom, it often leads to a severe underperformance. Similarly, Au had identified that education should branch off and go beyond the classroom. It is not fair to students to provide them less than a well-rounded education. By providing them with information beyond academia, it also allows them to explore their potential in other areas, and understand that they are more than products, and their grades. By giving them that perspective, it also assists in building their confidence, both as a student, and an idividual. Finally, Laufenberg had provided a perspective that recognized that students were not recieving sufficient education. She identified some problems that may be the leading cause of this issue. Not only were students treated unfairly, but educators weren't doing their part to be encouragers. Rather than warranting shame from failure, she had pushed educators to embrace it and make room for development. All three of these theories are intertwined, and stem from a universal observation. The education is doing students a disservice, and each person has an idea of how to overcome and reform these issues.

The mind map that I created highlights some of the principles held by Diana Laufenberg, Wayne Au, and Mike Rose and how they all relate to the current education system. Each expert calls for systemic changes that can improve educational practices– and ultimately the schooling of students. Laufenberg promotes project based learning over multiple choice tests because she believes that it encourages more critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. She is a strong advocate of student autonomy and offers many opportunities for kids to take control of their learning experience in her teaching roles. Au also criticized standardized testing but has more of a macro perspective in which he believes that there are many systemic issues affecting education that require drastic attention. Mike Rose explains in his book that the education system fails many students who can succeed if given the right support. Each of these individuals believe that there are fundamental issues in education that hinders students' ability to learn and grow.

Over the last few weeks, we have been diving more into the educational foundations of America. In our efforts of doing this, we have taken a look at many influential figures who have shaped our educational system, or who have been overall pretty public about their views. Three of these important, influential figures include Diana Laufenberg, Mike Rose, and Wayne Au. Diana Laufenberg shared her wonderful perspective on how students must be heard from in order to enhance their learning. The notion of standardized testing working as a one size fits all measure of intelligence and potential has been shut down by all three of these figures. Wayne Au believes in the basis of equality for all students, exactly like Mike Rose. Students are individuals whose potential comes from their own creativities and ideas, and not from these tests that are made for only few to excel on.

Comparing the Education Experts

When looking at the three educators, there is the underlying idea that education is not separate from society. It is heavily involved in students' engagement in the community, in democracy, and in social settings. Wayne Au speaks to this directly as he says a rehaul of the education system needs to include the community. Diane Laufenberg would agree as she had her students run an entire forum for the community. Regardless of class, race, religion, each community member can bring something unique to the table to create the best education a student can have.

This education needs to be encompassing and inclusive. Prejudice and bias are distractions to learning. This is an important aspect of teaching students how to become active members of society. Aside from basic skills in math, language arts, science, and history, students can learn practical skills in the form of communication, leadership, and teamwork. Once students step foot in school, they need to be nurtured toward reasonable goals for themselves. Mike Rose would agree that students should not be pushed toward college. Standardized testing serves to prove capabilities in the traditional subjects and help students get into higher education. It does not help the students looking to pursue an alternative route. That does not mean they should get less help towards their version of success.

All in all, all three of these education experts would not want to see students seated at desks all day, writing papers or completing math problems. There needs to be more to education to create more well-rounded individuals.

These three people all have a lot to say about education and the way we see it. I think most of them have the same ideas but go about it differently or focus on different aspects. Mike rose and Gardiner both have similar perspectives on how information is perceived. A lot of them agree on Wayne Au's deep consciousness. They don't life standardized testing. All authors think that education is important for individuals but they use different methods to get there. I agree with a bunch of the authors individual points. I organized my map by the authors and then education at the center. I chose to connect the ideas that I thought overlapped between the people we discussed.
