Wherever I go, there is a koi pond I can gaze into, watching the fish do their complicated dance around each other to find space. Their cohabitation in an environment designed artificially for them seems all too familiar in our current focus on materialism. In this painting, I wanted to show her as the focus of the painting without Hades being there to provide a male-driven narrative. Her posture and the nudity shows her demure nature, but still portraying her as independent and self-sufficient.
We see her sitting amongst the flickering lights of the jewelled poplar trees of the Underworld, surrounded by pomegranates, the fruits of her demise.

This shows a result of a more physical exertion, how physically we lend ourselves to the world and sometimes forget to give ourselves time and rest. It’s still linked to emotion in the sense of being exhausted and tired of exerting yourself, whether it be physically or mentally.

However, once it’s looped enough times, we get desensitized to it, no longer feeling the disorientation we first experienced upon viewing the animation. It holds the messages of all the other pieces, and embodies the true umbrella theme of the whole exhibition. We look into the mirrors hanging in front of us, seeing a jumbled and messy reflection staring back. But there is a projection directly on our face, a chaotic but graceful movement of flowers and nature. This is the beauty within the mess, the wildflower growing in the cracks of concrete.
