It was also difficult to find water for the crops.

Terrace: wide steps on the side of mountains. Without them it would have been to steep to water, harvest, or plow. And terrace system increased the amount of land that the Inca could use for agriculture. It also kept the topsoil from washing away down the hillside in heavy rains.

Bridges were built to allow for better travel around giant river gorges. Huge road networks were constructed to allow for better travel through the mountains, further unifying the empire. 

Transportation: they had two main roads liking the north and the south, and there were crossroads that reached nearly every village in the empire.
