- Auden traveled around the world and was witness to much political strife during both World Wars and the Spanish Civil War. After observing the wars he changed politically and he converted to Christianity.

- Modernism was a literary and cultural movement that aimed to break away from past tradition. After the Romantic period, which focused on nature and being, Modernists mused on the topics of the inner self and consciousness. Modernists saw humanity dwindling as the world around them was industrialized and events of war took place.

"I sit in one of the dives On Fifty-second Street Uncertain and afraid As the clever hopes expire Of a low dishonest decade: Waves of anger and fear Circulate over the bright And darkened lands of the earth, Obsessing our private lives; The unmentionable odour of death Offends the September night."
- September 1, 1939

Auden truly lives up to being a"chameleon writer" because he was incredibly adaptable with his work. Many authors will many times find a style they prefer and stick to it. Auden experimented with a plethora of subjects, and many verses and meters in his work.
