The core of higher education is critical thinking, which is also a major area of study in university prep programmes. strengthening one's reading skills, especially their capacity to read critically is essential for aspirant university students. Students in some classrooms looked to be performing (just "doing the task"); yet, in other sessions, students showed a more deep bond with the reading material, showing the emergence of an analytical mindset that may be useful in both university and the workplace. (Dong, 2015; Fox, 1994)

This is however not an option for those from backgrounds where English is not their first language. In addition to thinking critically, students in the EAP programme will also need to read critically. They must act quickly since, according to certain sources (Dong, 2015; Fox, 1994), it's probable that their educational background is focused more on memorization than anything else. More precisely, some scholars argue that potential overseas students should understand their place in relation to the dominating power of western education.

The literature has discussed cultural disparities in critical thinking styles extensively.

Bali (2015) claims that, while critical thinking is not a primarily Western notion, students differ in the forms of cultural and social capital that they bring to the institution in a useful discussion of the problems in teaching critical thinking at the American University of Cairo.

Wilson, K.

Importance of critical reading in the academic world.

The process of analysing a text to understand the meaning and asses the argument is known as critical reading. A reasoned argument is present here to evaluates and analyse the reading. This analysis does not provide the particular text only face value but also the deep understanding of the topic is also claimed. Critical reading practice push the students to develop deeper skills. Students have less experience in the critical reading section. In different curriculum of courses critical thinking is attached and that makes the students to gather experience. One of the approaches of the critical reading is to discuss the newspaper articles by group of students who met regularly and by this the particular perspectives can get from the individuals (Wilson, 2016). ). From different case study by the experts, it has found that there is no proper way of teaching the critical reading (Wilson, 2016). The teachers can make the students conscious about the critical reading. sometimes maintaining high engagement in intuition, the students can improve the critical reading. Critical readers seek for knowledge and their purpose is not to find the faults. Critical reading helps in mental development. Better understanding of any topic is easier by this method. This practice makes the brain to remember more from readings. Problem solving skills with better logic is achieved also. Critical reading also helps to become organized in the academic life too.

Reference:

Wilson, K., 2016.

According to (Gillett) EAP is a pre seasonal course that students often take to prepared for their actual main university course. There is often discussion whether these two terms - EAP and study skills - mean the same. I find it useful to make a distinction between general study skills that are not concerned with language and language study skills that will probably form part of an EAP course. There are many study skills books available for native-speakers and they usually concentrate on matters like: where to study, when to study, time management, remembering, developing study habits, filing and organising books, how to spend leisure time and so on, although they do often deal with aspects of study skills that involve language such as planning essays and so on.

Referencing

Gillett, A.
