• Direct economic gains

• Increased foreign exchange earnings: International tourist cities like Paris earn substantial foreign exchange from foreign tourists' spending on accommodation, dining, and shopping.

• Driving related industries: Tourism stimulates sectors such as transportation, accommodation, catering, and entertainment. For example, in Lijiang, China, the booming tourism has increased the number of inns and sales of local specialties.

• Job creation: As a labor - intensive industry, tourism provides various jobs like tour guides and hotel staff. In Phuket, Thailand, it has offered many employment opportunities.

• Indirect economic gains

• Infrastructure improvement: Cities invest in infrastructure for tourists, which also benefits local residents. Barcelona's transportation system improvement after the Olympics is a case in point.

• Enhanced city image and popularity: Successful tourism activities can attract more investment. Dubai's iconic buildings have made it well - known globally and attracted business investment.

Disadvantages of over - dependence on tourism

• Vulnerable economic structure: A city relying too much on tourism is at risk when affected by external factors like the COVID - 19 pandemic. Venice's economy declined sharply during the pandemic due to the lack of tourists.

• Overexploitation and damage of tourism resources: Over - reliance may lead to excessive development. For instance, the influx of tourists in Angkor Wat has damaged the ancient ruins and the surrounding environment.

• Seasonal unemployment and economic fluctuations: Many tourist cities have peak and off - peak seasons. In off - peak seasons, tourism workers may face unemployment, as seen in Beidaihe.

The higher a city gains from tourism, the higher its dependence on tourism economy is bound to be. Even if the share of tourism revenue is adjusted, the loss of this revenue will hit the city once tourism suffers. For example, Macau's income has dropped a lot during the epidemic, precisely because of its excessive dependence on tourism economic income.

With proper planning and sustainable practices, tourism can bring significant economic benefits and cultural exchange. However, Over-reliance on tourism can lead to issues like overcrowding, infrastructure strain, and environmental degradation. The key is to balance tourism with other economic activities and ensure that the benefits are distributed equitably. Therefore, the paradox can be mitigated with effective management and a holistic approach to tourism development.

I have an idea that the higher the level of development of a city, the higher the mobility of the population it can bear. The so-called imbalance in the supply of services for residents and tourists is a problem of development stage and level. It is a normal phenomenon that the city's self-growth is not matched with the external changing environment, or in the process of dynamic matching.

Therefore, the lower the development level of a city, the less it benefits from this.
