The Old Man, Santiago, and the boy, Manolin are very close and the boy always helps the old man. Santiago goes out to sea to catch the fish of a lifetime and sure enough ends up hooking it. The Fight with the Marlin lasts forever, and in the end tragedy strikes when sharks tear up the fish he's worked so hard for.

Santiago had a dry spell in his fishing and was really being trashed on for it by others. He was so nice and calm and let the insults roll of of his back. He went out to sea to basically catch a huge marlin and have the adventure of a lifetime. (Huge fish on small boat with a hand line).
