I think that the requirement to be a caliph would be to make a major change in the spread or the helpfulness of Islam to the world. And also to be a good leader and not a tyrant.

I think shia was right because ali helped spread Islam, along with being the cosien of Muhammad (also considered as a friend in the Islamic culture).
