The fashion house last month announced plans to cut the number of annual shows it gives from five to two – a move it claims will encourage shoppers to extend the lifecycle of their clothing, and fashion houses to reduce production accordingly. This should, indirectly, bring about a climate impact, given that 45% of global emissions are attributed not to energy but to linear systems of material consumption.

Carbon offsetting is a way of compensating for your emissions by making an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere. For large corporations, carbon offsetting is often a financial transaction, which involves investing in environmental projects and conservation schemes to balance out the damaging emissions produced by the company’s operations and supply chains.

Gucci and Burberry have invested in projects endorsed by REDD+, the VSC-approved scheme set up by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that aims to stop deforestation.

Offsetting also means that companies have to assess the impact they’re having on the environment. “Measuring the carbon footprint of our show was just a first step,” adds Gabriela Hearst. “If you don’t collect the data, you don’t know the number you have to reduce by. We should know the actual numbers of our impact [of doing] business. These are the steps needed to understand the real cost of our products to humanity.”

-It follows then that internal hiring practices now garner the same press as an advertising campaign. First came the news in February 2019 that Miuccia Prada and her team would receive sensitivity training, followed by the announcement that the brand would launch a Diversity and Inclusion Council, led by Ava DuVernay.
-Later that month, Burberry released announced a slew of internal diversity initiatives. In March, Gucci announced its multi-tiered Gucci Changemakers program to combat racial inequity, and later hired Renée Tirado as the global head of diversity, equity and inclusion. In July, Chanel hired its first ever global head of diversity and inclusion in Fiona Pageter.

-as a new wave of Black Lives Matter protests emerged across the United States, fashion brands were once again called upon to make public their stance on racism. Gucci shared a poem from Cleo Wade on its Instagram, followed by another post announcing donations to the NAACP, Know Your Rights Camp and Campaign Zero and that it would close U.S. operations on June 4th as a day of mourning. Prada also committed itself to fight for racial justice in an Instagram post, while Burberry promised a donation to Black Lives Matter and Chanel posted three black squares in a row.

The success of those scholarship programs, unconscious bias training or the hiring of a diversity and inclusion officer can’t be seen in a year. It takes more than mere months to undo century-old practices after all. But the public pressure has mounted to such a degree that the brands that don’t do more than surface-level campaigns likely won’t survive another 100 years

This is not to suggest that there aren’t some obvious sources of enhanced revenue and profits currently in front of them. Penetration into new growth markets such as India, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa provide rich new hunting grounds. There is also increased focus on membership and subscription programs, locking customers into ongoing auto-replenishment systems for routine and regular household purchases. Enhanced share of fashion and especially of the luxury markets holds potential, particularly for Amazon, which has until now been seen as a pariah by luxury brands. Media and music platforms, as well as advertising revenue, all provide significant opportunities for continued growth and expansion. Moreover, increased deployment of robotics, as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos put it, “vaccinate” their supply chains to future crises and drive even more human costs and labour issues out of their back-end operations.


This news should be cause for worry among all businesses, but it should be particularly concerning for incumbents in sectors that have been ruled largely by gated oligopolies such as the banking, insurance, healthcare, education and transportation sectors. Not only have these sectors been traditionally reticent to self-disrupt, Covid-19 has shone a bright light on their respective vulnerabilities. And that has the apex predators circling their prey.


It becomes quite easy to imagine a future state where you receive one monthly charge for everything from the food in your refrigerator and the shoes on your feet to your home insurance and the cost of your kid’s tutoring and all provided by one company. And this will spell disaster, not just for many retailers but for any business that sells anything to human beings on earth. Having embedded themselves in so many aspects of consumer life, they will form a barbed-wire fence of value around their customers that becomes almost impenetrable. The result will be an almost total domination of the middle-ground in every market and category.

SURVIVING PREDATOR GIANTS
-for those residing amongst these apex predators, a radical rethinking of their competitive positioning and the value they offer the market will have to happen.

A good place to begin is by acknowledging that beyond the human and economic toll exacted by Covid-19, the pandemic has also acted as a temporal wormhole pushing almost all of society from the industrial to the digital age. Work, education, entertainment, communication and even social experiences themselves have had to rapidly evolve and adapt to a physically distanced world

Media Is the Store, The Store Is Media

-If it wasn’t already becoming obvious, Covid-19 finally slapped the retail industry into seeing that physical stores are not only an impractical and expensive means of distributing products, but that they’re incredibly vulnerable to disruption. Increasingly frequent interruptions brought on by social unrest, climate change and, of course, pandemics all spell potential trouble for physical stores in the future. In a world where our iPhones are open for business 24/7, the inherently limited availability and access offered by brick-and-mortar stores renders them increasingly inconvenient.

-But to be clear, this in no way negates the value of physical stores as community gathering places, brand culture hubs and experiential playgrounds. It is however time to stop considering them an effective means of product distribution. Stores must become more about distributing experiences and less about distributing goods. Because the two are rapidly trading roles.

Jane Jackson: "A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is Latin for 'course of life'. In contrast, résumé is French for "summary." A résumé is a summary of your career highlights that are relevant to the reader. A CV in the true sense of the word can be a much longer document and can include everything that you have done in your career including papers you've published, research you've conducted and more."

-My role is quite varied. As a team we cover everything from styling mannequins to changing light bulbs! As a luxury store great visual standards is a must so we are always kept busy. I work in a team of 15 which includes managers, visual merchandisers, signage assistants and display assistants.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve ever done in your role?

Getting to go on a field trip to help set up for the Duke of Edinburgh awards at Stoke park. I spent the day styling a collection of dresses worn by the ‘Bond girls’ in the James Bond films. It was such a great experience.

Describe a typical day in your role

It’s safe to say there is no typical day in display! Besides the mornings which always consist of floor and window walks to check that everything is up to standard, the rest of the day I could be redressing floors, bubble wrapping mannequins to send to another store or filling out paper work to follow up a new scheme

My role involves looking after all display aspects of the store with a focus on womenswear. This includes dressing the windows, styling mannequins around the store, creating product showcases and planning and executing interior displays. I primarily work with the display team but I also collaborate with a number of different teams in and out of the store to complete projects such as managers, head office and outside companies.

The best things about working at Harvey Nichols is that no two days are ever the same. Displays covers so many diverse areas and each project, be it window dressing, mannequin styling or designing interior displays allows you to do something different and keeps you constantly challenged.

Describe a typical day in your role

Typically I start my day by catching up with my managers and team and planning needs to be achieved for the day. This generally involves inspecting standards in my designated areas of the store, then depending on what project I’m on I could be dressing mannequins, designing interior displays or executing an idea. 

In 2017 The Textile Exchange, a global non-profit organisation, challenged some of the world’s biggest retailers and brands (and also polluters) to reduce their reliance on polyester. Companies including Adidas, The Gap and H&M sought to reduce using virgin polyester in their collections by 20 percent by 2020. The target was reached just one year later, laying the foundation for more brands to find polyester alternatives.


Garments made from plastic bottles

Recycled polyester mostly originates from recycled plastic bottles. In the US alone, 35 billion bottles are discarded every year. Plastic takes up to 1,000 years to degrade in a landfill. One innovator to turn plastic into fibres is ECOsense, who’s fabric is made from 100 percent post-consumer plastic bottles. The company says its solution dye process requires none of the water or harsh chemicals often found in package dyeing with the end result offering a natural, soft hand and the durability, drapability and colourfastness of virgin polyester.

The downside to recyclable plastic bottles is that doesn’t stop the use of plastic for the food and beverage industry.
