They had only heard the tribe's name, they didn't know how to spell it, and they knew that they would come back and find the colony abandoned, so they wanted to leave a clue on where they went.

How come they only managed to spell "Cro" on the second one?

The tribe had written Croatoan on one of the trees and maybe someone else was writing croatoan on another tree but then they realized they were making another one so they just stopped after Cro.

Maybe they were being hunted down and they did not have time to right the whole thing.

They were going to leave a second clue but they realized they didn't have enough time and they had to go so they only put "Cro"

This article states they were challenged by "Indian Attacks" so what does that really mean, were they killed by the Croatan defending their land and they just wanted to warn people with the sign on the tree? Why else would the Croatan's lie?

How many people went missing

117 people of the 117 people went missing. So all of them went missing.

Why didnt they leave some people behind for when the people came back?

If they wanted to leave someone behind they would have. If the Croatans really did help them, there was probably some reason they wanted to take everybody and they just thought the Croatans would tell the people when they came back, which they did.

But the Croatans being against them would actually make more sense. Because the Croatans would have been attacking everybody so they wanted to leave a clue. And then the Croatans lied to the people that came back.
