Eastern Hemlock
-Tsuga canadensis

The Eastern Hemlock is commonly known as the Canadian hemlock. They are in the pine family and are one of the most common conifers growing in Eastern North America.

The Eastern Hemlock is in a triangle-type shape, are very slow growing trees, and can reach to a height of 80 feet or more.

The leaves are small and needle-like, similar to most conifers. They have darker green shades on the top and a lighter green on the bottom of the needles.

Fun fact! The bark, which is a reddish brown color, of the Eastern Hemlock has a tannin content of approximately 10-12% and was used to tan sheepskins and other leathers during the late nineteenth century for use in shoe making (according to the U.S Forestry Department).

Due to its fast growing nature, Black Locust trees are often used in land reclamation projects and roadside planting. The tree has also been used for chemical pulping in the paper industry. Its honey is collected for trade and consumption, and its leaves are used in Korea and Bulgaria for livestock feed. Finally, its wood has a high heat content which makes it very useful for building fires.
