The purpose of this section is to explain to the reader about how different the society’s are even though they are in the same world. The “savages” are basically a visual explanation of why the others live the way they do. Also that the people like Lenina is so conditioned to not like the Indians and their way of life. This demonstrates the mood.

Use Linda to show how dependent the citizens of the World are on their civilization.

“What I had to suffer- and not a gramme of soma to be had... I had an awful cut on my head when they first brought me here. You can’t imagine what they used to put on it. Filth, just filth. ‘Civilization is sterilization,’ I used to say to them.” (120-121). Linda’s experience and the way she sees the Reservation shows her conditioning. She thinks everyone is crazy/filthy, and anti-social. She can’t do anything for herself and just constantly thinks about soma.

In addition, these societies everyone must follow there societal road. Barnard is going against the status quo and is threatened Helmholtz Watson. In addition, the hierarchical class in Brave new world can be connected to the chain of being in the tempest. People must “stay in there lane” throughout these societies. In the tempest there are different levels of status based on your “worth”, which is the case in Brave new world. Bernard wants to challenge this and is threatened for doing so.
