This was one of the first discussions we have had. I read three articles about three individuals who were international students attending a high school in Baltimore. Reading about "Torn Between Two Worlds", "Facing Hardships, Facing Resilience", and "The Newcomer" let me learn about Narmin's, Exel's, and Monique's experiences while struggling to adjust in a new learning environment in a strange, alien country.

Linguistic assumption is when an individual sends a message with the expectation that others are decoding or reading the message as intended. All of us speak differently, and sometimes, we just assume that the person we're speaking to automatically understands what we are trying to convey.

how does language inform us?

Dialect is a form a language that is distinct to one specific area. Individuals grow up speaking the language they are most comfortable with hearing or speaking. Some individuals, like me, are even able to speak multiple languages. All individuals possess a dialect that traces back to their origin. People from all over the world have a unique accent or tone while speaking certain words or saying certain phrases. The English, Irish, Korean, Japanese, and other foreigners who did not grow up speaking english possess noticeable accents in their speech. This might seem absurd or abnormal to our ears, but it is the norm for those individuals.

Born from parents who were both raised in China, I grew up speaking three languages. Now, you may be wondering, “Jade, if you’re Chinese, shouldn’t you be bilingual instead of being trilingual?” I guess you could say that, but I am able to speak three languages, two of which are Chinese dialects. I am an english, mandarin, and fujianese speaker. My first language was fujianese, which was spoken to me by my parents, and basically all of my family members. Because this was my first language, I lacked some skills in my english-speaking. When i first began school, I had to be put into ESOL, which was a program in school for students who did not have sufficient english communication skills. To this day, when i visit the motherland, I still get complimented on my fujianese-speaking skills. Many fujianese children these days are not trained to speak the language anymore, so we’re more of a dying breed. I learned to speak english through ESOL. My teacher was proficient in teaching me how to sound out simple english words and sentences. From then on, I developed my english-speaking and made my way out of the ESOL program at my elementary school. I know what you may be thinking, “You only addressed three languages. What about mandarin, the other language?” Well, let me tell you about that now. My mother signed me up for this Chinese school on Sundays, starting when I was in the first grade. Every Sunday, I’d sit in the front-most seat in the classroom to keep up with what the teacher was teaching. I first started with the basics of pinyin. I sounded out “bo”, “po”, “mo”, and other phonetic sounds crucial to learning the chinese language. From then on, I diligently practiced my mandarin whenever i had the chance to. And after about ten years, i graduated from chinese school, earning a successful score on the AP chinese test.

There are a little more than seven billion individuals on this earth, each having his/her own unique dialect. What your dialect is depends on where you were raised, where you grew up, and what lingual situation you have at home.
