yanek and his family lived in Krakow Poland but with just a blink of an eye their city was invaded by the Germans beginning WWII for now yanek and his family remain in krakow for a little while they stay in their flat with several other families anti semitic rules have been put in place that persercute jewish people taking away any rights they had over time walls are built up around the ghetto to contain the remaining jews who have not been taken for resettlement or deportation yet one by one many jews were relocated to other jewish ghettos work camps concentration camps or were killed on site

Yanek is placed into a truck with 49 other prisoners and transported to the Wieliczka salt mine and marched inside the sheltered entrance to the enormous mine, split into groups of 10, boarded elevators, and then guided by their kapo through a labyrinth of tunnels of salt than over a huge lake in the mine down into another elevator and then into a large chapel-like room with beautiful salt statues and then finally into cold dead barracks

Yanek after getting out of the salt mines and transported to the Trzebinia concentration camp he's angry, furious that the prisoners don't fight back despite their massive number advantage but once he gets to the camp that only gets worse because the guards at Trzebinia don't just make them work they make them do work for absolutely no reason, work just for work, and then laugh at them, this made Yanek extremely upset at the guards and the other prisoners for not fighting back but when one of the prisoners that is getting beat with a club grabs it and beats the guard Yanek thinks this is the chance but, nobody else is going to do anything they just keep their heads down and then the prisoner fighting gets shot in the head and Yanek gets very scared, scared he'll die scared someone else will die but then the guards accuse a random prisoner to hang and then more and Yanek realizes this is why nobody fights because when you fight, others get punished as well so he ends up accepting that he's not gonna be able to fight to save his peers because he'd rather die without a fight than fighting and getting others hurt because of his own actions.

the literal journey of Yanek to Birkenau is brutal and cold he's marched into a cattle truck with so many other prisoners that he cannot move he ends up getting lucky being next to an air vent to the outside of the truck he's cramped next to so many other prisoners he can barely move his arms during the ride he can barely breath even when next to the air vent its suffocating in the truck when they are stopped in the truck two little boys throw snow at the air vent allowing Yanek to get some water for the ride to come and after days of being in the truck they finally get out of it and into Birkenau Yanek is loaded into a gas chamber where into of gas water comes out of it and washes him and the other prisoners are then clothed and loaded into barracks with nothing but wooden shelves and zero bedding.
