The effects are that she may be more at peace with herself realizing that two can work as one. This relates to the real world because a lot of people go through being one person hat society tells them to be and blocks out their old self, but what arha is doing is what a lot of people do, they figure out that they pushed the old self behind and took the one society gave them and they take both of them and mash the two personas together to create one person that is both the good and bad so it balances out. It takes a lot to rethink our beliefs so that is why it took tenaha 7 or 8 chapters to figure herself out and get a better idea of who she is as tenar rather than just as arha. I also think that we should rethink because it can help us find us, we don’t always know us until we look into it, and no one knows us until we know ourselves. rcohen262 https://padlet.com/rcohen262/i0i3givxb599q8dy/wish/1940593612 Ryan]]> 2021-12-10 15:39:40 UTC https://padlet.com/rcohen262/i0i3givxb599q8dy/wish/1940593612 #2 rcohen262 https://padlet.com/rcohen262/i0i3givxb599q8dy/wish/1940596125 The tombs of atuan offer us a lot of life lessons such as find yourself, solve your problems and find them, and a lot of other things, le guin really tried to make a good book with a lot of life lessons for anyone that was reading them but she tried to hide it so it made us think about the book more, I think that this was a very good decision by le guin because she incorporated lessons without directly telling us as the reader. What comes up a lot is the light and dark with came up in every chapter, to me it shows the good and bad because they are opposites and tenar was in the light and arha is in the dark, the wizard is in the dark because the tombs of atuan are dark because they are mysterious and only the ones that know the place can navigate it.

In school some classes are good, some are bad, to me math is dark and english is light because they are polar opposites to me in school.

In chapter 4, Arha is first confronted with the idea of unfaith from Penthe. This seen on page 47 through the quote,“She had not realized how different people were, how differently they saw life.”  This is one of Arha’s first big realizations and starts of most of her struggles with her identity. The character Ged however really gets her to actually change. He is very  different from her in many ways having a different appearance, different beliefs, a different gender, and he also introduces her to sorcery and illusions which she is unfamiliar with. Ged’s influence leads Arha to discover more of her true self like when he reveals her true name by saying “Take care Tenar,” on page 114. He also causes her to be a kinder person which is shown from her change of wanting to make Ged die and suffer during chapters to begging Manan to keep him alive during chapter 8. This can apply to the real world because sometimes people come into our lives who have completely different views and perspective and they can cause us to question ourselves and change our  thinking. It can take a  lot to rethink our beliefs because it can be overwhelming and sometimes scary. Trying to look at the world in a whole new way can be confusing and it can be difficult to know what to even think. I think  that it is important to question  things because you might end up doing the wrong thigh if you don't and stay stuck on one thing not knowing the other possibilities.

One of the main takeaways is that you have to expand your thinking at times and not stay stuck thinking only one thing, refusing to view other possibilities. This is shown through Arha meeting Ged and learning of a new perspective that causes her to change how she views life and herself. It is also demonstrated with the frequent motif of light and dark and other opposing things which shows most things have at least too sides which are neither good or bad but just different. It also tells us about identity and how we view are selves which is represented in Arha’s journey to reconnect with her identity of Tenar. One thematic statement I came up with for chapter 8 is “The names you give a person can affect how you see your self and how you see other people.” This was a very interesting concept to learn that I probably wouldn’t have learned without reading this book. It really shows how the names Tenar and Arha correspond with her two identities and how she sees herself and also how calling Manan things like an old fool allows her to view him that way and gives her a reason to not take him seriously.

This is something I sometimes think a lot about and I find myself questioning myself. I don’t really struggle because of it like Arha does but it can still be confusing and I find myself thinking about it a lot. I can sometimes relate to the way Arha feels as she tries to find her true self and it is interesting to see how she deals with it and how she starts to piece together who she really is.
