It would power factories and mills that were previously powered by water,  wind, horse or man. <br><br>The steam engine was powered by coal. Its growth in use and popularity fueled a booming mining industry as well.<br><br>The steam engine was used to power trains that would help move materials and people to the west. The steam engine powered westward expansion.</div>]]></description>
