Let's be honest, kids love interactive activities that they can then wear when they are done! This awesome crown/hat is a great activity to introduce the lesson and create conversations with their peers. Students are able to color their butterfly and crown/hat any color they like. They then can color the parts of the life cycle and sequence them in order to the front of the crown/hat. To really make sure students grasp this material it is essential to have an interactive portion of your lesson. This is a great activity to have students do for independent work, possibly as a warmup activity at the beginning of the day or when they have finished their other work. This website gives students a lot more information on the anatomy of a butterfly and goes into detail about its life cycle. This is too cute! I feel when you are teaching new material to students, you cannot have enough hands-on activities and practice with the material! This is another great resource you can do with your young scholar. Some supplies that can b used to do this activity are construction paper, typed and cut-out labels, glue, scissors, small cotton balls, white string, felt, markers, and a fake butterfly. This activity is going to need assistance from the teacher. Students will glue the corresponding life cycles and labels in order and then decorate their life cycle with leaves, arrows, and whatever else you provide them with. Students will be able to look at a 3D model of the butterfly's environment, the cycle stages, and what they actually look like. It is important to have multiple different resources and ways to present the material. Some good options to diversify your lessons are read-aloud, videos, diagrams, models, activities, experiments, field trips, handouts, and many other resources available. This 3D diagram is a great tool to use when explaining the different cycles a butterfly goes through to reach an adult butterfly. This is something that you can create on your own or buy. There are many activities that can be done using this 3D diagram too! Students can pretend to be researchers studying butterflies. You can include different stations that students would rotate around to in groups. I really like this video for 2 reasons, the first reason being that the video touches on the life cycle of a Monarch Butterfly, which relates directly to our lesson. The second thing is that this video shows really great visuals and videos of a Monarch Butterfly when they are an egg, caterpillar, pupa, and adult butterfly.
