Rachel Williams (3): Psychoanalytic Analysis of Passage from Macbeth

"Methought I heard a voice cry "Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep" --the innocent sleep, / Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care" (2.2.47-49).

Answer the following:

the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself)

Macbeth is speaking to Lady Macbeth

the context (what was happening at this point in the play)

Macbeth has just killed King Duncan, and he's extremely paranoid.

Analyze this passage from the Psychoanalytic perspective. (Hint: What is Macbeth repressing?)

The reason Macbeth is struggling so much is because he isn't repressing the way he feels. Whereas his wife is repressing her moral issue with the situation, so she can focus on "the end goal", Macbeth's conscious mind won't let go of the fact that what he's doing is wrong. His subconscious desires have yet to consume his entire life so he feels very little motivation (besides his wife) to accept his actions.
