Puritans

The Puritans were a group of English Protestants 16th century who sought to reform the Church of England and establish common wealth. They were very religious and believed that everyone was born into sin. Instead of establishing a government the Puritans believed that god was their leader and they were supposed to bow down to him. Once the Puritans left England due to religious persecution they founded and settled in the New World. Aspects of Puritanism continue to influence American life today.

Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and persecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. Over 200 people were put on trial for the supposed acts of witchcraft. Thirty people were found guilty, 19 which were executed by hanging. The reason why this whole thing started was due to the fact that a group of young girls became ill and exhibted unusual behaviors. The girls suddenly refused these accusations and pointed their fingers at people in the town, and those innocent people were put on trial immediatly.

City Upon a Hill theory

The ''City Upon a Hill'' theory was associated with the puritans. Referring to the idea that the Puritan colony in Massachusetts Bay would serve as a shining example of Christian virtue to the world. The Puritans believed that they were a model for society in hopes people would follow in their footsteps. John Winthrop came up with this idea in 1630. He believed that Massachusetts would be a proud example to the New World.

Tituba

Tituba was an enslaved Native American woman who was a key figure in the Salem Witch trials. Tituba was brought to Salem in 1680 by her enslaver, Samuel Parris after being captured as a child in Barbados. She worked in the household and it was believed that she would preform voodoo magic and would teach the young girls in the town. It stirred excitement and guilt in the girls and affected their behaviors. One doctor said that the girls behaviors were strange and aberrant and declared the girls were under a evil hand of witchcraft. Their behaviors were a reaction against the witch.

Sarah Good

Sarah Good was one of the first of three women to be accused of witchcraft in Salem. She was known as the town begger and was often judged because she married her servant. The young girls accused Sarah of casting spells on them and Sarah was later put on trial. Even her own husband was suspicious of her actions because he viewed her as a bad wife and he didn't like her demeanor towards him. She had a chance to convince the jurors that the accusations were false but they didn't believe her and she was sentenced to death.
