Reichstag Fire, February 1933
The Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of the People and the State (Reichstag Fire Decree) of 27 February 1933 was a significant event that played a great role in Hitler's consolidation of power. The coalition government accused a man, Marrinus de Lubbe, of being part of a communist conspiracy and arrested him. He was then charged with arson and attempting to overthrow the government. Hitler convinced President Hindenburg, an anti-communist himself, to invoke Article 48 of the constitution, establish emergency powers, and sign the Reichstag Fire Decree. Justified on the false premise that the Communists were planning to overthrow the state, the decree suspended civil liberties such as freedom of press and freedom to assemble in public. It also gave the central government the authority to overrule state and local laws and overthrow state and local governments. Hitler's SA arrested communists, broke up their meetings and shut down their newspapers. Those who spoke against Hitler was also beaten up. Thus, it was a negative example of Hitler's rule on his people.
SOURCE

Enabling Act, March 1933
The Law to Remedy the Distress of the People and the Reich (Enabling Act) allowed him to enact laws, including ones that violated the Weimar Constitution, without approval of either parliament or the President. This gave Hitler an immense amount of political power. The Nazi Party won 44 percent of the votes in the March 1933 elections. With the support of another small right-wing party (Hugenburg's Nationalist Party), the Nazis had more than 50 percent of the votes in the Reichstag. With that, Hitler now planned to pass the Enabling Act.On 23 March, when the Enabling act was to be voted on, SA and SS men were stationed outside the building and only Nazis and their supporters were allowed to enter the building. The bill for the Enabling Act therefore passed with more than the required two-thirds majority. The Communist Party and the Social Democrat Party were banned from taking part in future elections. Therefore, this was a negative example of Hitler's rule on his people.
SOURCE
