This is when the praxis part of ethnic studies really comes in. Getting students to identify, study, and seek solutions/responses to social issues that matter to them/in their community.

This seems like an action piece that builds off of tenet 4. Take your own narrative, your family's narrative, your community's shared narrative, locate a problem, then put action behind it!

A huge goal for me is to give students the tools to deal with what the "real" world will throw at them. Not in the "this is how to do your taxes sense, but in the healing communities and building resilience in the face of autocratic regimes sense.

How do you counter a student who says there is "no problem" to be addressed? Sometimes students feel so powerless that they cope by being the overly cheery ostrich with their head in the sand? IDK...I'm still forming this thought.

I do encourage my students to engage in civil discourse, when they raise issues or questions I make sure they know what pathways are available to them if they should choose to act upon it.
