As the Jews arrive at their newly destination (ghetto), they're left amidst the chaos of their situation, forgetting about those who formerly lived there, Eliezar pondering throughout the night hopelessly.

This moment connects to the theme of struggle with religious faith, showing Eliezars start of unfaithfulness against god, viewing him as eyes who are blind to the situation. Unsure if He's either careless of their situation as they suffer, or if He even is here with them.

Under the hands of the Nazis, once both Eliezar and his father answered the questions to Dr. Mengele, they find themselves heading towards the crematorium for their doom, his father helplessly praying.

We can see Eliezar expressing a sudden disbelief/anger that his father had been praying for at this time. If He was this "Almighty", then why hadn't He prevented any of this from happening--feeling denial that this was even happening, being against the idea.

As the Jews and Eliezer begin their travel--on trains--for their newly destination (Forced transfer), a woman named Mrs. Schachter, screamed nonstop, and as days went by, losing their minds slowly, her screams, tormenting them day and night.

The moment emphasizing his and the Jews torture, of dealing with the lack of resources for them to survive. Being forced to face the torments of knowing no one would be here to save them, not even themselves from staying sane--a bitter reality.

On a Sunday, as the prisoners worked, sirens went of off, signalling every man to get out of the camp: soon destroyed by bombs as Eliezer and the men watched, feeling a sense of hope.

This depicts Eliezer's changes from living in the camps: its tortuous environment influencing the way one thinks. Reaching the point where they no longer feared the chances of death from the bombs, seeking for a way out of the Nazis grasps, by a quick death.

As thousand of men gather around--including the Blockalteste and Kapos-- to celebrate their Jewish holiday (Rosh Hashanah), Eliezer listens to others praying, becoming hasty to do so as well.

Upon the feeling of angry and isolation between him and God, he no longer denies the harsh truth of his situation of evilness. His trust in the kindness of others corrupting down into utter void, no matter what they did, it had no purpose.

After a torment hike through the snow, they've finally arrived at the new camp, being shoved into a barrack being left to suffocate as the multiple bodies trampled onto each other.

We can understand more how cruel/careless the Nazis were, taking every victim to their limit--if they wanted to survive-- leaving every prisoner hopelessly chasing for a will to live. Having to face obstacles after another, being ripped from nearly all of humanity, as he silently suffocates with no way of screaming for help.

Following some days and nights of traveling--spent without resources--the prisoners starve, as German workers pass by amused at the site. As they dropped pieces of bread, dozen of men fought, driving themselves to madness.

The affects of the Nazi's acknowledges significant changes between each survivor's mental state, being placed in a train with no resources to survive. Eliezer implies how greatly they've been deprived, causing them to behave violently towards others without any human restraints at this point.

As they arrived at Bunchenwald camps, Eliezers father became sickly weak, days passing by as his condition worsened. Eventually getting tired of his constant complaining, watching as his father gave his last breath.

On a deeper level, an understanding of grief though relief can be felt from Eliezer, left feeling with no need to cry. Witnessing the multiple tortures and murders, this was least of his worries, feeling free of knowing he no longer had to take care of his father.

Finally being liberated by the camps (Nazi) hands, Eliezer begins to feel sick from a sudden "poisoning", as he awakens from the hospital a few weeks later, reflecting upon his own reflection.

The phrase represents Eliezer's loss of humanity and spirit, the mirror reflecting the horrifying trauma of all events. He no longer recognizes himself, after all he has lost, a "corpse" forever taunting him of being a survivor.
