Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a German philosopher born in 1770 and died 1831

-widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western philosophy

Hegel used something called "dialectics," which is like a fancy way of saying that when two things are in conflict

He believed that each time something new happened it made things better

Scenario involving dialectics- you and a friend are trying to decide what game to play. You might both have different ideas (that's the conflict), but by talking it out, you come up with a new game that combines both of your ideas

"The rise of the state was inevitable":

This suggests that the state (or government) was always going to emerge as a dominant force in human society

"The state above all!"

For Hegel, the state is the most rational and important institution, and it provides the structure that enables

individuals to reach their full potential.

"The state is as God walking on the Earth"

- This is a powerful metaphor, likening the state to a divine or god-like force.

"We should therefore be surprised that man was ever individualized..." :

Hegel believed that individual freedom is truly realized when people are part of the rational, organized whole of the state, so focusing on individualism would be surprising to him.

"The state will be strong so long..."

suggests that the strength of the state is what will ensure its endurance.

Summary of what the prologue means:

It reflects the idea that the government or "state" was always going to become super powerful. It’s saying the government is really important and so it's surprising that people ever thought they should act on their own or do things without asking the government. In the end, the government will stay strong and in control for a long time.

It’s basically about how some people believe that the government should be the most important thing and that people should follow it above all else.

Do these philosophies relate to our character?

I think that it partially relates to Anna Maria. We can see in the play that she takes the side of Jesus. As she is the first not everyone else has committed to Jesus and this can reflect Hegals idea of conflict when there is two sides opposing. On the other hand i disagree because in the end everyone comes to the same decision as Anna Maria rather than creating something new.

Are there any of Jesus' teachings in the show that your philosopher might agree or disagree on?

Forgiveness- I think that Hegal would strongly agree on the teaching of forgiving others. This is because it can be seen as part of his philosophy. You should forgive when in conflict and then it'll become a better plan from what you both wanted to do.

Dont be selfish- Additionally i think that Hegal will agree on this teaching as part of his philosopher can include to not be selfish. This is because after conflict two people decide on what thing rather being selfish.

Dont lie- I somewhat think that Hegal will agree because it isnt bought up within his theory.

The ivory tower is seen to be where those who are high up in the hierarchy or usually a professor stay to be far away from the real world and problems that regular people face. When someone talks about ivory tower it normally means someone whos not connected to the real world and ignore the unpleasant things in peoples regular lives.

The significance of Tower of Babble

The Tower of Babel is a story from the Bible when everyone on Earth spoke the same language. They all understood each other and decided to build a tall tower that would reach the heavens to show how powerful and smart they were. But God didn’t like that they were trying to be so prideful. He wanted people to work together, but not to get too full of themselves. In order to stop them from finishing the tower, God made them all speak different languages. Because no one could understand each other anymore they couldn’t work together to build the tower.

The story teaches us about the importance of humility and why there are so many different languages in the world.
