I’ve learned a lot from you as a boss and a librarian! You’ve had a brilliant carrier with so many accomplishments and memorable moments, congrats!!

Enjoy your retirement, this new phase in life when we are our individual “boss”, doing things we enjoy in our own time. Freedom translates our new life. Hope we get rid of this virus, and will host you in Rio again. Abraços e saudades!

I  saw a photo of you in your office with your back to the window.  All of a sudden, it seemed as if a gentil breeze came through the closed glass and spread "saudades" all over my living room...

Spiritually I linked emotions and our friendship.  It brought back so many "memories"...

I "revisited" parties, ceremonies, arrivals, departures, awards, ends of tours, good-bys, welcomes, people we looked up to and others who we helped, tutored, encouraged, praised, selected, promoted, pipped (!).  Employees who became part of our lives, each one in his/her own way.  We learned a lot.  The strive to do our best to the employee and to fulfill the USG/LOC's aspirations, intents, programs and results, was our passion.  We made it so many times and failed a few,  but, we really tried!

All in all, we were a family.  There was mutual respect, mutual understanding, mutual consent and mutual orderly dissent.  We saw each other grow, get married, leave, return and then...retire.  Now, it is your turn!

Looking back, I clearly remember a day when I was interviewing one of your employees for the CAJE exercise, and we started talking about the Library of Congress and its magnitude and importance.  Of course I was dead silent.  Then you said:

"Ana, have you ever been to The Library? - "N,nno".  "Can you imagine the size of the Library"?  - "N,nno"  "Do you know how many books we have there"? - "N,nno"!

Then you smiled and said:  "just for laughs, I know you will like this one! We have a book, which is a jewel.  It is properly kept in a plastic box, and to see it you go into a room, and they give you the box, instructions, a magnifying glass and a pin"!  I said,  "BUT...WHAT?! "A magni.......,  a pin". WHAT for"???   You:  "The magnifying glass is to read the "book"!  And in my painful ignorance, I said, "what is the pin for"?  You said:  "to turn the pages!"  I was speechless.  The little treasure, it seems, is still there!  The title is:  "Old King Cole" and it is 0.9 X 1.25 X 1 mm square! 

I really pray I did a good CAJE report for the employee I was interviewing because after that, I was mesmerized by your story of the tiny book...  God Bless all Libraries, all authors, all books written, the people who "nurse" them and those who teach us how to love them ALL!   YOU ARE ONE OF THESE PERSONS!
