My task is to create a 30 second advertisement, directed at a specific audience. To be honest I am not entirely sure what I will do at all. I have an idea that I could do something in relation to my hobbies, showcasing how they make me feel, but these are two ideas. Coming up with 80 ideas will definitely take a while.
I have created videos before but not an advertisement. I am excited to see what I come up with and how my design skills are improved over this course.
I am passionate about my hobbies, making memories, and living in the moment.

Week 2 - Message

This week I have chosen which subject I will work on from my list of 80 ideas. I have chosen "The Sims Selfcare". Basically a humorous ad targeted towards looking after yourself.
To portray this message, I will be playing with the theme of 'playing god', as God himself comes down to tell the person to look after themselves, breaking the forth wall, and making my audience laugh a bit. I want them to go away with "taking care of myself is easier than I think."

Attention
To capture the attention of the audience, I aim to use atmospheric lighting to make the image appear 'dreamy', hinting to the false reality the individual has created through binge-gaming. When God comes down to talk in the video, after he disappears I aim to make the atmosphere appear dark and depressing, forcing a reality check on the protagonist. This reality check caused the protagonist to act and take in the words of God to look after themselves.

Tone
How does my target audience feel about my topic?
My target audience may feel like they have limited knowledge on the subject of taking care of their mental health. I aim to target this by having the protagonist act in such a way that is relatable to teens.
How do they feel after they've watching your video?
I want them to feel like they've had a bit of a laugh, but understanding that they can ask for help and it is okay to do so.

Desire + Interest
I aim to keep my video visually appealing, as with gaming setups, they can be quite visually beautiful. For the first half of the video, around the computer is where I aim to keep the bright and vibey colours. But after the interaction with God and the protagonist has had a reality check - the colours shift to dark moody colours, but slowly change back up to the bright colours once things are taken care of.

Action
After the video has concluded, I aim for my audience to feel a sense of relief. The relief of knowing that they aren't alone and that their problems matter and they deserve love.

The target audience for my advertisement is 16-24. I have chosen this audience because the topic of my promotional video is an issues concerning younger people. People who know less about themselves and the world around them, and with the addition of mental illness plaguing their lives, would make it even harder to seek help through convention means. Video games are widely used amongst the youth, so I will appeal to this audience by making pop culture video game references, around the idea of playing god with your sims is just as easy on yourself.

Moses, T., 2010. Being treated differently: Stigma experiences with family, peers, and school staff among adolescents with mental health disorders. Social Science & Medicine, 70(7), pp. 985-993.

From analyzing this source, I have discovered that teens are treated differently due to stigmatization from peers. This results in teens concealing their problems to avoid stigmatization (Moses, 2010). Having this stigma around mental health issues pushes teens into isolation, or to associate with others with the same issues. This stigma is not only surrounding the mental health issues themselves, but the clinical services to treat these issues. This stems from a poor understanding of mental health in schools (Moses, 2010).

“Close to half (46%) described experiencing stigmatization
by family members, which often took the form of unwarranted assumptions, distrust, avoidance, pity,
and gossip. About one third (35%) of participants reported stigma perpetrated by school staff, who
expressed fear, dislike, avoidance, and under-estimation of their abilities. Fortunately, 22% reported
‘‘different’’ treatment by school staff, but this treatment was interpreted as positive and supportive.” - (Moses, 2010)

Yap, M. B. H., 2013. Associations between stigma and help-seeking intentions and beliefs: Findings from an Australian national survey of young people. Psychiatry Research, 210(3), pp. 1154-1160.

This stigma may contribute to worsened mental health for these teens. Belief in personal weakness and isolating to avoid stigma, results in less intention to seek professional help (Yap, 2013). There is almost a link between personal stigma, where the individual may feel that mental illness is a sign of weakness - undermining their illness - which further results in not seeking professional help. This source also notes that informal means of help, such as through a family member or friend, was less researched, as the primary aim of this article was to find the connection between personal stigma and the use of professional help services.
It was also states that younger people suffer more from personal stigma, as per a lack of understanding of themselves and how their brain operates. Young adults, despite stigma, were more inclined to seek professional help through means of understanding of their psyche.

"Findings highlight the importance of examining the associations between different dimensions of stigma with different sources of help, specifically for various mental disorders, to better inform future efforts to reduce stigma and increase help seeking in young people.” - (Yap, 2013)

Zillmann, D., & Vorderer, P., 2000. Media entertainment: The psychology of its appeal. Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers.

Using coping strategies for mental health is nothing new. But with the rise of video games appealing to teens, issues can arise if they use video games as escapism from their real issues, furthering their mental fatigue (Zillmann, D., & Vorderer, P., 2000.). Playing video games can also be a good stress relief to individuals, different from movies - where there is passive involvement - video games create a sense of immersion through active interaction with the story. Playing online games can help the player feel a sense of belonging and connection to the people they are playing with. This, although positive quality to video games, could cause the person in question to get so immersed in the online world to the point where they neglect their bodily needs.
Emotional involvement is an important part of the psychological appeal to video games. The emotional experience consists of phases: a cause, arousal, a cognitive appreciation, labeling, followed by actions to remove the arousal. Depending on the skillset of the individual playing the game, they might feel adequately equipped to deal with the events of video games, or they could feel defeated if they feel unprepared in this experience.
