This book is nonfiction. It is about a girl named Elizabeth Smart who was kidnapped from her own house as a teenager. She was held captive for many months and tortured. She explains and describes all that went down and how she kept hope through everything. I would recommend this to someone that enjoys mysteries or things that involve crime.

Don't lose hope. It sounds cliche, but it truly is an obvious theme throughout the whole book. Elizabeth had to adapt to a new life and survive off of nothing. Through it all, she managed to keep herself under control and hopeful.
Fight and survive. This is a pretty obvious message that is learned throughout the book pretty quickly. It may be simple, but it is a main theme of this book. Elizabeth dropped all of her worries and problems and realized that all she had was the ability to fight and survive, so she might as well do it the best she can.
You don't know what you've got until it's gone (don't take things for granted). Elizabeth lived her life day to day without a worry in the world, but suddenly it was all taken from her. This made her realize she could never have what she used to have again.
