It's Kind of a Funny Story is a young adult fiction book written by Ned Vizzini. It is based on the author's personal experiences. This makes for an authentic story; it is raw, especially for audiences who haven't been exposed to things such as depression, suicide, or the mind of somebody who is suffering internally.

It's Kind of a Funny Story is about a high school student, Craig Gilner, and his struggle with depression and self torment.
This story is written in Craig's point of view. In the beginning of the story, Craig introduces himself, his family and talks about his current situation. After time and as the story progresses, Craig's depression begins to get worse. He understands that these feelings aren't normal and seeks help. He winds up going to a hospital and is checked into the adult psychiatric unit. From there, his attempt to recover is an uphill battle.

Plot

Something that was interesting about the plot was the development of how Craig handled his suicidal thoughts. I feel as though this was an extremely responsible way to have handled that situation, and I'm glad that this book showed that turning to professionals for help was a good idea.
After Craig went to the hospital, everybody was telling him that he did the right thing and people were praising him for making the decision to receive professional help. I don't have any concrete connections with this book. I have talked to and helped friends who have been diagnosed with depression and have heard of the thoughts that go through their mind. I believe that I can compare the scene where Craig goes to the hospital to receive help can compare to a number of things. I believe that this can compare to a number of situations - if anybody needs help in any situation, I feel as though that would make a person strong.

I find the cover of this book to be intriguing. The cover could possibly resemble one of the maps that Craig made of a city (Craig enjoyed map-making by hand), or it could resemble a map of a place included in the story.

"I wasn't going to have enough money to pay for a Good Lifestyle, which meant I'd feel ashamed, which meant I'd get depressed, and that was the big one because I knew what that did to me: it made it so I wouldn't get out of bed, which led to the ultimate thing - homelessness. If you can't get out of bed for long enough, people come and take your bed away."
Page 15

"Just thoughts of what I have to do. Homework. And it comes up to my brain and I look at it and think 'I'm not going to be able to do that' and then it cycles back down and the next one comes up. And then things come up like 'You should be doing more extracurricular activities' because I should, I don't do near enough, and that gets pushed down and it's replaced with the big one: 'What college are you going into, Craig?' which is like the doomsday question."

I would recommend this book to most audiences, especially young adults or people who are interested in reading stories that revolve around the topic of mental capacity. This story would be good to read because it will aid in educating people who aren't aware of these things. Some things that a reader may enjoy about this book is the bluntness of it, which is something that I also enjoy. In addition, the author speaks as if he is a freshman in high school, which can be engaging for young audiences.

Craig says this when he is talking to his therapist. This quote is important because I feel as though it's an accurate representation of Craig's constant feelings while he is struggling with his depression

This quote is important because it's an example of the "cycling" that Craig puts himself through. "Cycling" is what Craig calls it when his mind is racing. This happens to him often and this is an example of the things that he thinks about.

This quote expands on quote #2, this is also an example of the cycling. Whenever Craig's mind cycles, he always ends up thinking the worse possible topic. This is part of his daily struggle while dealing with his depression. I believe that this overthinking contributed to his depression.

The majority of the book sounds like a freshman in high school actually wrote it, which gives the novel an authentic feeling.

This song relates to It's Kind of a Funny Story because some of the lyrics are, "find a cure for my life," "you think I'm in control," and "build a fortress around my heart." I feel as though this song relates to this story because these lyrics resemble Craig. The lyric "find a cure for my life," could be a metaphor for finding a cure for his depression. Craig believes that if he wasn't depressed, than his whole life would be better.
