My goal is to be able to speak, read, and write simple/basic Mandarin. The Chinese language interests me and maybe I want to learn about some of the Chinese cultures in the future.

My goal has not changed and I still have a strong ambition to learn the language. In terms of writing, I only gained a little in this course as a lot of the characters were something I knew from the Japanese language. In terms of reading, I know for sure I improved drastically as I made the script for the presentation mostly from the top of my head, using pinyin and could easily read them without any subtitles in alphabets. In terms of speaking, I have a lot to improve on. I still struggle to pronounce correctly all the time and forming sentences quickly is still difficult. Lastly listening, is also like speaking, I struggle to hear the Chinese words when spoken quickly and understanding the meaning quickly is very hard. I didn't understand what she said and she couldn't speak English at all. However, when she said her words for the second time, I was able to hear "我想去Chinatown“. So to confirm, I asked back "你想去Chinatown吗？“. When she nodded her head I realized that she was asking me if the bus will take her to Chinatown. I replied with "对, this bus will!" with my thumbs up. I felt good that I was able to reply but I also wished I know more Mandarin, that way, I could understand her from the first time and reply fully in Chinese.
2) I tried to talk to my Starbucks manager in Chinese. I asked her "你忙吗？". Unfortunately, she just laughed and replied to me in English. So I thought I have to improve more.
3) I talked with my co-worker in Chinese. He was at first surprised that I spoke Chinese(don't remember what I said) and so I said "我学习汉语". He complimented me for having good pronunciation and it made me feel happy and want to improve more to speak to him completely in Chinese in the future.
4) I've been noticing the slight difference between Simplified Chinese characters and Japanese characters. The Chinese character "请" is "請" in Japanese. I believe the traditional writing is more similar to the Japanese one in this case and it's interesting to see how some of the letters are transformed to simplify.
5) I have been comparing the meaning of some of the Chinese characters and the Japanese characters. I enjoy doing this because it's interesting when I find some letters that mean the same and also sometimes spoke the same. For example, the word "看" somewhat means the same. For Japanese, "to read" would be "読" but, "to look after" would be "看" and it is pronounced "kan". Although for Japanese, this letter is mostly used with a combination of different characters, I was excited when I found this out.
