What adaptation and evolution means are adaption is about how something changes over a long period of time in order to survive in their current environment. For example, a penguin is different to a tui because it has thicker feathers in order to survive in the cold. Evolution means something that takes a long time to happen. Like humans would been kind of the same 100 million years ago, with arms and legs but they would look more like a cross between a monkey and a squirrel.

How Kiwis adapted to NZ's unique conditions was since there was no predators on the floor they spent more and more time on the forest floor, looking for worms and insects to eat. For doing this having wings wasn't a necessity but having a long beak, big body, and strong legs was. By this happening, the kiwi became flightless like many other native NZ birds. If you look through their feathers you can still see tiny wings from the remembrance of their past.

A niche is the unique ways that a species interact with their environment. The niches that these three things have filled is the Moa used to fill the niche that deer fill in other countries. By this they used to wander the forest floor eating plants. The Weta would fill a niche that usually mice would fill by being nocturnal and eating both plants and insects. The last thing to fill a niche is is the mamaku plant. They fill the niche of the huge angiosperm trees other countries have. They can grow up to be 20 meters tall. They were successful because the moa had very few predators to worry about, the weta had lots of food to eat and very few predators to worry about, and the mamaku tree got to collect sunlight high above any other plant.

Some animals don't survive because when humans arrived the animals were caught unprepared and didn't know what to do. One of the examples of the endangered species is the mokohinau stag beetle. I think they are endangered because birds, rats and stoats would kill them. Maybe change of their environment. Another example of a species that was caught unprepared and endangered was the Tara Iti (NZ fairy tern). They could of been caught unprepared by eating litter and rubbish that ends up killing them. Another is the Chatham island taiko. I they they are going extinct because of rubbish that they eat and sometimes they may go egg bound. Rats and possums would maybe eat their eggs slowing the population to come back.
