         <title>Guayaquil</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><b>Guayaquil</b>, officially&nbsp;<b>Santiago de Guayaquil</b>, is the largest and the most populous city in&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador">Ecuador</a>, with around 3.75 million people in the metropolitan area, as well as the nation's main port. The city is the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_(political)">capital</a>&nbsp;of the Ecuadorian province of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayas_Province">Guayas</a>&nbsp;and the seat of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayaquil_(canton)">namesake canton</a>.</p><p>Guayaquil is located on the western bank of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayas_River">Guayas River</a>, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Guayaquil">Gulf of Guayaquil</a>.</p><p>HISTORY</p><p>Guayaquil is recognized as being founded, by the government, on July 25, 1538<font size="1"><span style="line-height: 0px;"> </span></font>with the name Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de Guayaquil&nbsp;<br></p><p>On October 9, 1820, almost without bloodshed, a group of civilians, supported by soldiers from the "Granaderos de Reserva", a battalion quartered in Guayaquil, overwhelmed the resistance of the Royalist guards and arrested the Spanish authorities. Guayaquil declared independence from Spain, becoming&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Provincia_Libre_de_Guayaquil&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1">Provincia Libre de Guayaquil</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Joaqu%C3%ADn_de_Olmedo">José Joaquín de Olmedo</a>&nbsp;was named&nbsp;<i>Jefe Civil</i>&nbsp;(Civilian Chief) of Guayaquil. This would prove to be a key victory for the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuadorian_War_of_Independence">Ecuadorian War of Independence</a>.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><b>Quito</b>&nbsp;, formally&nbsp;<b>San Francisco de Quito</b>, is the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_city">capital city</a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador">Ecuador</a>, and at an elevation of 9,350 feet (2,800 meters above sea level), it is the highest capital city in the world housing the administrative, legislative and judicial functions.</p><p>&nbsp;It is located in north-central Ecuador in the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayllabamba_(river)">Guayllabamba</a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_basin">river basin</a>, on the eastern slopes of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichincha_Volcano">Pichincha</a>,&nbsp;an active&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovolcano">stratovolcano</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andes">Andes</a>&nbsp;mountains.</p><p> With a population of 2,239,191 according to the last census (2010), Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador, after&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayaquil">Guayaquil</a>. It is also the capital of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichincha_Province">Pichincha province</a>&nbsp;and the seat of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quito_Canton">Metropolitan District of Quito</a>. The canton recorded a population of 1,842,201 residents in the 2001 national census. In 2008, the city was designated as the headquarters of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_of_South_American_Nations">Union of South American Nations</a>.</p><p>HISTORY</p><h3>The Inca Civil War:</h3>Quito was plunged into civil war sometime around 1526. Inca ruler Huayna Capac died (possibly of smallpox) and two of his many sons,&nbsp;<a href="http://latinamericanhistory.about.com/od/theconquestofperu/p/08Atahualpa.htm">Atahualpa</a>&nbsp;and Huáscar,&nbsp;<a href="http://latinamericanhistory.about.com/od/theconquestofperu/a/08incacivilwar.htm">began to fight over his empire</a>. Atahualpa had the support of Quito, whereas&nbsp;<a href="http://latinamericanhistory.about.com/od/theconquestofperu/a/08huascar.htm">Huáscar</a>'s power base was in Cuzco. More importantly for Atahualpa, he had the support of three powerful Inca generals: Quisquis, Chalcuchima, and Rumiñahui. Atahualpa prevailed in 1532 after his forces routed Huáscar's at the gates of Cuzco. Huáscar was captured and would later be executed on Atahualpa's orders.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The city of&nbsp;<b>Cuenca</b>&nbsp;— in full,&nbsp;<b>Santa Ana de los cuatro ríos de Cuenca</b>&nbsp; is the capital of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azuay_Province,_Ecuador">Azuay Province</a>. It is located in the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_(geography)">highlands</a>&nbsp;of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador">Ecuador</a>&nbsp;at about 2500&nbsp;m above sea level. The center of the city is listed as a UNESCO&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Heritage_Site">World Heritage Trust site</a>&nbsp;because of its many historical buildings.</p><p>HISTORY</p><h3>Spanish settlement</h3><p>The Spanish settlement of Cuenca was founded on April 12, 1557 by the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer">explorer</a>&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gil_Ram%C3%ADrez_D%C3%A1valos&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1">Gil Ramírez Dávalos</a>.&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9s_Hurtado_de_Mendoza,_3rd_Marquis_of_Ca%C3%B1ete">Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza</a>, then&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Viceroys_of_Peru">Viceroy of Peru</a>&nbsp;had commissioned the founding and ordered the city named after his home town of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuenca,_Spain">Cuenca, Spain</a>. It was founded decades after other major Spanish settlements in the region, such as Quito (1534), Guayaquil (1538), and Loja (1548). Cuenca's population and importance grew steadily during the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism">colonial</a>&nbsp;era. It reached the peak of its importance in the first years of Ecuador's independence; Cuenca achieved its independence on November 3, 1820. It became the capital of one of the three provinces that made up the nascent republic. The other two capitals were&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayaquil">Guayaquil</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quito">Quito</a></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><b>Machala</b>&nbsp;is a city in south-west&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador">Ecuador</a>. It is the capital of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Oro_Province">El Oro Province</a>&nbsp;and located near the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Guayaquil">Gulf of Guayaquil</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertility_(soil)">fertile</a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowland">lowlands</a>. Machala has a&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population">population</a>&nbsp;of 230,901 ,it is also the fourth biggest city of the country; and the second most important port, it has been referred to as the&nbsp;<i>Banana Capital of the World</i>.<br></p><p>HISTORY</p><p>In 1820, Machala Guayaquil joined the independence movement.
In 1822, attempts to create Tomalá Province, formed by the cantons, including  Machala with their counties : Puna, Balao and Orangery, the capital was supposed to be Santa Elena.
Machala  was declared canton of  the Province of Guayas, which in turn was part of the Department of Guayaquil on June 25.</p><p>In 1829, some machaleños added Sucre's army and fought in the Battle of Tarqui.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><b>Ambato</b>&nbsp;(full form,&nbsp;<b>San Juan de Ambato</b>) is a city located in the central&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andes">Andean</a>&nbsp;valley of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador">Ecuador</a>.Lying on the banks of the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambato_River_(Ecuador)">Ambato River</a>, the city also sits beneath several tall mountains. It is the capital of the province of&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tungurahua_Province">Tungurahua</a>, at an elevation of 2,577 meters above sea level. The population is 180,000, making it the tenth most populous city in the country. It is variously nicknamed "City of Flowers and Fruit", "Cradle of the Three Juans", and "Garden of Ecuador." Inhabitants of Ambato are called Ambateños. The current mayor of Ambato is&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Callejas_Barona">Fernando Callejas Barona</a>.</p><p>HISTORY</p><p>The city has been fully or partially destroyed by earthquakes several times in its history, most recently on&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1949_Ambato_earthquake">5 August 1949</a>&nbsp;when the city and its cathedral were almost completely levelled. The city was rebuilt in the two years following. In honour of the tenacity of the resident Ambateños, the city celebrates the Festival of Fruits and Flowers during&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival">Carnival</a>&nbsp;in February. Today, the Festival of Fruits and Flowers is one of the most important in Ecuador.</p><p>The city is referred to as "Cradle of the Three Juans" as it was the birthplace of three notable Ecuadorians:&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Montalvo">Juan Montalvo</a>, a noted<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essayist">essayist</a>&nbsp;of the 19th century,&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Le%C3%B3n_Mera">Juan León Mera</a>, the author of the country's&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_anthem">national anthem</a>, and Juan Benigno Vela, a key figure in the Ecuadorean independence movement. The city is well known for its production of fruit, tanneries, food products and textiles.&nbsp;It also serves as a main transportation hub, especially for travelers moving south on the&nbsp;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-American_Highway">Pan-American Highway</a>.</p>]]></description>
