By Elisavet Petraki

Substance use disorder makes over 20 million Americans suffer. So, it's a huge problem research into this began just in the middle of the previous century. The first investigation discovered that addiction affects rats' brains. In 1994, neuroscientists found that it affected tissue function, more specifically the Limbic system and the Cortex. The first one is responsible for basic survival instincts and reinforces behaviours that cause the release of dopamine. The same thing happens with the cortex with a substance that hijacks that part of the brain with the difference that the hijacker needs more and more substance to activate the same level of reward. But, there are personal and environmental factors that contribute to the development of addiction. However, if you are addicted, there are other risk and protective factors that prevent from addiction.

by Pelagia Trigoni

Write a short paragraph about the main point of the video about addictions.

The professional term about addiction is Substance Use Disorder. All kind of substances that cause mainly the production of dopamine in the back part of our brain can cause an addiction which is basically a brain disorder according to the doctors. Addiction is a nationwide kind of disorder and a very common kind of disease. A substance like drugs for instance, affects the parts of our brain responsible for our basic needs and behaviors that help us function properly as organisms. Under drug effect we cannot make proper decisions as we act without thinking. The more a person consumes a substance the more quantity of that substance is needed in order to satisfy that person. Addictions are easier to appear in individuals of a younger age such as teenagers, as their brain is not fully formed yet. As a result, it can be affected faster and the damage is more severe. However, we can prevent substance use disorder through parental help, proper information and even if someone falls into that trap, there are treatments to it and places to support that person and help them go back to their normal life. It is also shown through studies that after treatments the parts of the brain damaged by an addiction can go back to normal almost completely.

by Eleftheria Saide

This video is about addiction and its impact on people's live. According to it, about 20 million people are addicted to drugs, alcohol or other substances and 1 out of 7 have, at some point of their life, been addicted. Scientists begin to understand addiction back in the 50s. Drug and alcohol affect the limbic system and the cortex. The limbic system is responsible for the feeling that we are different from the other animals. Drugs and other substances damage the brain tissue and makes us feel that
the drug is what we need. The factors that make someone use substances like drugs are both individual ( like genes ) and environmental ( like drug availability ). Addiction can be prevented and at this point family and society can play a significant role. Also, even if someone gets addicted , this doesn't mean that there is no treatment. Through proper support millions of people and their families can be helped to overcome addiction.

By Thanos Stergioulas

Unfortunately, the numbers of people struggling with addiction are rising and in order to fight this problem, we need to understand it. Drugs and alcohol take over some parts of our brain, the limbic system, where the basic instincts and the need for survival are stored, and the cortex, where decisions are made. This means these substances trick our brain into believing they are necessary for our survival and gradually overshadow our true needs. But it doesn’t stop there. Addicted people always need more of the substance they’re addicted to, so they can feel the same level of reward. This results in heavy damages on the brain tissue. That’s why it’s very important to delay when drug use begins, since most addicted people have been exposed to drugs at a very young age. Thankfully, the right treatment can restore significantly the damaged part of the brain.

As mentioned in it, in order to stay alive we do things that give us pleasure such as eat, drink and protect our family. Then the limbic system secretes dopamine that make us feel good. So, we need to repeat them. But an addicted person believes that he needs mainly what he is addicted to. With the continuous use of a substance the brain tissue is destroyed. However, there are individual and environmental factors that contribute to the development of addiction. There are also factors that can help treat it such as medical treatment and professional help.

Addiction is a severe and obsessive need for a specific substance/activity. It is connected to certain parts of the brain that dictate vital needs for our survival such as eating, drinking water and protecting our offsprings. The neural connections that it affects start presenting the consumption of the substance as a similarly important need to be covered and in the case that it fails to, the brain reacts by causing exruciating pain and extreme withdrawals symptoms to take place throughout the body. It is possibly aligned to genetic reasons.

B3' CLASS

In summary, the first video explains what addiction is. According to this, more than 20 million people suffer from various forms of addiction, whether they include drugs, alcohol and many more. In order to keep ourselves alive we do the things that are necessary such as eating, sleeping and drinking water. From that moment the production of dopamine starts which makes us feel good! In a similar way works any form of drug, which makes people unable to resist it and over time the need to take the substance becomes greater. The constant intake of substances, gradually leads to the destruction of brain tissues and so man takes the form of a puppet controlled by a substance.

The second video describes the process by which the drug acts and eventually changes the general function of a teenager's brain. His brain may look just smaller in size than that of an adult, but the difference is inside. The functions and structure of a teenager's brain are not complete. So a drug acts like a hacker who steals our passwords and changes all our data. Other forms of addiction move in the same way, such as alcohol, lack of sleep and junk food. But in the end the decision is in the hands of each of us. We are the programmers of our brain and every action of ours has its consequences.

It is really amazing how responsible we are for our own development! We have the opportunity to decide which future we want to choose: a happy healthy life or an intense seeking of any substance.

When we are kids we cannot understand that our brains aren’t fully shaped yet and that we shouldn’t embrace harmful habits, such as lack of sleep, drinking alcohol, using drugs etc. Because of this incomplete phase we are very vulnerable, can easily be affect and end up suffering from a brain disease called substance use disorder, or as most of us know it addiction. This transforms the patient into a whole new person. All his habits, priorities change, because the function tissue is damaged. He doesn’t care anymore about finding food, water, a shelter to spend the night etc., but he is desperate to find this specific substance that caused the addiction.

Fortunately, this brain disease is both preventable and treatable. Specifically, parents, schools and experts can play the role of the guardian by educating and informing the kids from a young age about the horrendous consequences of addiction. In case of being addicted and wanting to be healthy again, but cannot, there are many hospitals, programs and services that can help. Even though rehab is the most difficult and painful phase, it’s the most rewarding one.

We are the only ones who can control how we want our future to be . It’s in our hands to make the right decision, in order to shape our brains in the most functional, advantageous and ideal shape.

Junk food is often placed in high-traffic areas, like checkout lines, to tempt impulse buying. To avoid it, plan your meals in advance, make a shopping list, and stick to it. Focus on shopping the store's perimeter where fresh, whole foods are located. Shopping while hungry can also lead to impulse buys, so it’s better to eat before you go.

Staying away from junk food at the supermarket can be tough, especially with all the tempting snacks lining the aisles. However, a little preparation can make it easier. By sticking to a shopping list, shopping mostly in the produce and fresh food sections, and avoiding aisles filled with processed foods, you can reduce the temptation. Shopping after a meal rather than when you're hungry also helps, as you're less likely to make impulsive decisions. With these simple steps, it becomes much easier to fill your cart with healthier options.

Buying junk food at the supermarket is not easy to avoid at all for multiple reasons. Firstly, the colors and the fancy packagings that the junk foods are in capture the attention of the buyers and that's how the urge to eat something unhealthy begins. Also, the haze of the agressive marketing, such as gluten free and lowfat products, makes things more difficult. Lastly, junk food looks delicious, is cheap and there is literally everywhere.
