I was obsessed with all the princess Disney movies, where the princesses were always beautiful and skinny, elegant, wore feminine clothing and had characteristics people associate with femininity like kindness, care, love, etc. Though these princess Disney movies did teach many good morals and progressive ideas, they did so as comfortably as they could- by keeping the women in traditional standards of beauty and femininity. And of course when they got married at the end, it was assumed and told to me that after that she would have children.

I remember when I was little and I couldn't care less about how I looked. In middle school and high school, however, I accepted that my worth was in my beauty, femininity, and fertility (yes fertility even in middle school. Most girls believe that their goal in life should be to marry and have babies. Rhymes like the K-I-S-S-I-N-G one didn't help either) and I began to obsess over my looks. I acted dumb and cute around boys because I realized they liked to be the smarter ones. I spent so much money on products to change the way I looked. Even now, though I can act like myself around men and am not embarrassed to say my feminist beliefs and embraced my masculine side/style, I still am careful with how I present myself to society. I work out and eat carefully and wear makeup. I still want to be beautiful, and beautiful in the way that I was told beauty was.

As an Educator

I am always trying to make sure kids know that women can do and be whatever they want- we don't need a man to be happy and complete. However, I still wear makeup to work. I still conform to societal standards for women. Though there is nothing wrong with wearing makeup and conforming to societal standards, kids are observant. They see how us adults want to be viewed and they keep that in their minds. No matter what I say, the small, subconscious things will stay with them.
