When was Real Player first released?
Real Player was released by RealNetworks 22 years ago in April of 1995.
What is it?
Real Player is a cross-platform media player app, developed by RealNetworks. It is compatible with: MP3, MP4, QuickTime File Format, Windows Media Format, RealAudio and RealVideos. It is available on other operating systems other than Windows like; Linux, Unix, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Android and Symbian.
Give examples of some functions.
QuickPlayer has a built in, dedicated Converter application. It also acts as a media web browser as you can watch videos on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. As well as this, you can post on these websites any videos saved or edited on the RealPlayer.
What controversy has surrounded RealPlayer?
Earlier versions of RealPlayer was criticized for containing adware and spyware. In 1999 security researcher Richard M. Smith dissected some of RealJukebox's network traffic and discovered that it was sending a unique identifier with information about the music titles to which its users were listening. The story blew up so much so that PC World magazine named the 1999 version of RealPlayer the second worst tech products of All Time. RealNetworks issued a patch, and the spyware was removed in version 1.02.
What is Silverlight?
Microsoft Silverlight is a deprecated application framework for writing and running rich internet applications, similar to Adobe Flash.
Microsoft announced the end of life of Silverlight 5 in 2012. In 2013, Microsoft announced that they had ceased development of Silverlight except for patches and bugfixes. Microsoft has set the support end date for Silverlight 5 to be October 2021. Silverlight is no longer supported on web browsers such as Google Chrome since September 2015 and in Firefox in early 2017 and it was never in Microsoft Edge.
