The Depression hardened community attitudes against immigrants. Racism surfaced under the guise of protecting Australian jobs and businesses. Anti-foreigner riots occurred on the Kalgoorlie goldfields in 1934. These were followed by strikes demanding preferential employment for Australian-born workers. Immigrants in the 1920s and 30s maintained contact, where possible, with families and homelands. This was especially important when many were made to feel unwelcome.

While wool-growing remained at the centre of economic activity, a variety of new goods such as wheat, dairy and other agriculturally based produce became a part of the Australian export repertoire. It was in this period that the latter started contributing more to economic growth than wool production. Part of this emergence of other sources of economic expansion came from technological progress, such as disease-resistant wheat and refrigerated shipping. It was also the development of this technology that renewed large-scale foreign investment.

By 1900 the foundations of a film industry in Australia had been laid. Most European producers had Australian sales representatives; production facilities were established; and patterns of exhibition pioneered. The movies were soon so much a part of Australian life that the basic wage deemed them one of the necessities of our “frugal comfort”.’

In the 1870s, Australia became an important producer of tin with the discovery of the metal at Mt. Bischoff in Tasmania. In the latter years of the 19th Century, the first great mines were established: Copper and gold at Mt. Morgan near Rockhampton in Queensland; Silver, lead and zinc at Broken Hill in New South Wales; Gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia; and Iron ore at Iron Knob and Iron Baron in South Australia. In the early years of the 20th Century, mining activity in Australia began to decline despite a continued rise in the value of mineral production. The only major finds of the first half of the century were lead, zinc and copper deposits at Mt Isa but their full potential was not realised until the 1950s.
