I am a big advocate of reusing and repurposing items to do my part in decreasing the amount of waste on our Earth.
At a local farmers' market, I saw a women selling pieces of cloth and baggies in different sizes. The items were saturated with beeswax. The pieces of cloth and baggies replaced plastic wrap and plastic baggies. All they needed was a quick scrub with hot water and to hang dry before the next use.

This was another example of the dimensions of creative thinking both, Divergent and Convergent. First, the creator had to have generated many possible ideas as to a way to reduce the amount of waste. Prior to this, I'm sure the creator thought of several ideas to produce an actual product that would result in a solution. He or she also had to have made unique connections as far as the materials that could possibly be used (beeswax and cloth) and the functionality of each material, before making the best decision.

During inside recess, students can choose from different activities. Some choices include building with wooden blocks, Legos, and Lincoln Logs. I prefer the building materials to not get combined, so I strategically place the bins around the room. Undenounced to me, the students decided to build a 3 dimensional city mixing the Legos, blocks and Lincoln Logs. The students explained that the Lincoln Logs represented the past, the wooden blocks represented the present and the Legos the future.

One pump from a hand sanitizer bottle or soap bottle is too much for the hands of a child, resulting in a lot of waste and drips on the floor. This was a problem I had for years. I was always trying to explain to my students to take a "1/2 pump". Then Elias joined my class. Elias moved to Maryland from Louisiana. When he noticed my soap and hand sanitizer bottles he said, "Mrs. Silovich, why don't you have rubber bands on these bottles?" I asked Elias what he meant. He responded, "Well, that's what my teachers in Louisiana did so the squirts aren't so big."
"Aha!"

This example of creativity required such divergent thinking as "Flexibility in Thinking". The creative mind who owns this idea had to view a rubber band as something other than a tool to reinforce or organize and then make new connections to the other many uses for such a tool. Too, this creative idea included convergent thinking such as "Evaluation of the Problem". The problem was recognized and then evaluated. With logic an idea was generated to solve the particular drippy problem.

As educators we spend an enormous amount of time creating materials for instruction, so we take great steps to preserve them. For example, in 3rd grade we use a lot of different types of spinners to play math fact games. All of these spinners I have copied, cut, laminated, and cut again, so I like to keep them in good condition. The spinners I'm referring to require a pencil and a paperclip. The pencil secures the paperclip onto the spinner as it spins and finally lands on a spot. Well, for years my spinners didn't last as long as I had wanted, because the pencils would poke holes in them and leave dirt lead marks. So, I came up with a solution, I collected every empty mechanical pencil I could find, and replaced them with the typical lead pencil. Now, when students use my spinners, there are no hole punctures or dirty lead marks.
