Since 2003, garden volunteer crews have been working each week to re-establish the historic gardens. Volunteer activities include weeding, pruning, and planting. Through the project, volunteers will be introduced to the stories of the gardens and have the opportunity to visit some areas not accessible to the public. As an added bonus, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most tranquil time of day.

Located within Fort Mason, the site was developed with gardens and pathways in the 1850s by early San Francisco residents. The gardens are finally reopened for public use and ongoing stewardship—and we need your help! Volunteers will help to remove invasive species and revegetate the garden with a mix of native species and horticultural species that were planted by the residents over 100 years ago. Activities primarily include weeding, pruning, and planting. Please note that much of the work includes navigating slopes and stairs. If you need to work in a flat area, please let us know in advance.
