Share (1) a bit about yourself, and (2) describe how one of the pictures below could represent your teaching approach (3-5 lines). After you have introduced yourself and shared your story, don't forget to come back and read the stories of your peers and welcome them to the group! Similarly, we educators shape the individuals with the necessary skills and competencies (sunlight and water). We support (fertilizer) them in a way that once they grow professionally, they are better equipped with dynamic skills and knowledge to be able to serve society in a more meaningful manner (vegetable).

For me, teaching is an adventure and a memorable one at that. So when I meet my students for class, I like them to see a lesson or the course (depends on my duration with them) as an exciting adventurous hike. There will be hills and valleys as well as captivating vegetation during the hike that we all must traverse as learners but each leaves us with a lesson to take away with us. During the hike (read lesson/course), I will sometimes be at the back of the pack urging them forward, looking out to ensure that no one is left behind and that they are all able to cope with the demands of the course. Sometimes, I lead from the front helping them to navigate their way as I indicate obstacles that may obscure their journey of learning. In the end, it is always my hope that my students think and feel that it was worth taking the hike!

I am Prof Tashmin Khamis, the Vice Provost of QTL. Welcome to our 11 TLEW workshop and I am delighted to be facilitating this second online TLEW course of TL_net at AKU. It is one of the most rewarding courses I have experienced both as a participant (in Canada) and as a facilitator (in London, East Africa and Pakistan). I know from past evaluations you will enjoy a similar experience if you are able to fully immerse yourself in the course and plan your BOPPPS mini-lessons before you teach. As Vice Provost I have a global role at AKU, sitting in Kenya but spending a lot of time in Karachi where I lived from 1996-2001 as a faculty at IED. My family is from Uganda, but I was born in the UK. I'm married to a Canadian and my son was born in Pakistan and we currently live in Kenya. So I'm never sure how to answer the question where I am from! I have the privilege to work with, support and learn from faculty from all disciplines. That's why I choose the picture of the football game as I believe teaching is a contact sport and the best outcome is when you have a strategy for the game (lesson plan aligned to learning outcomes) but work with the team (fellow faculty; students) to reach the goal (deep learning)...and have fun along the way! I look forward to having fun with you all e on the TLEW course. Be prepared to play!

This is equal to giving additional information and encouraging the students to explore. The exploration is growth. I have to weed the plants and this is equivalent to correcting them when they go wrong. Finally harvesting is the evaluation I do to pick out ripe fruits ready for the market.

My name is Mary Oluga. Until recently, I worked at AKU-IED,EA as an Assistant Professor teaching in a number of courses in the Masters Programme. In the course of time, I facilitated in various TLEW forums alongside my colleagues and my collective experience resonates with the picture of the garden. I see myself as a gardener, tending and nurturing course participants to desired maturity and in the process I learn a lot in terms of what needs to be done better in order to get the desired outcomes. It is more about the what the learners (in this case, the crops in the garden) desire than what the teacher is equipped with. I am aware it is never a smooth sail in both ways, and that if the teacher and the learner come to a common understanding then a lot is achieved. It is for this belief that I let the course participants lead the learning process rather than I dictating how and what should be done. I am hoping we will have a great learning moment.

I am delighted to be facilitating this online TLEW course of QTL_net at AKU. So I'm never sure how to answer the question where I am from?! I have the privilege to work with, support and learn from faculty from all disciplines. That's why I chose the picture of the football game as I believe teaching is a contact sport and the best outcome is when you have a strategy for the game (lesson plan aligned to learning outcomes) but work with the team (fellow faculty; students) to reach the goal (deep learning)...and have fun along the way! I look forward to having fun with you all on the TLEW course. Be prepared to play!

Hello everyone,

I am Loveluck Mwasha a senior instructor and faculty member of the AKU-SONAM Tanzania Campus. Post-RN-BScN Programme. My area of interest is teaching midwifery and child health nursing courses among others. I am also, a TLEW facilitator.

In my teaching experience, I feel that my approach to teaching and learning resonates well with the theme garden. As gardener attention, and nurturing are needed for the seedlings to thrive and grow to full maturity. Likewise, students need guidance and support, and encouragement to bring out the best, discover and grow to their fullest potential. In the process, I also, learn and adjust to address the learner's unique learning needs and advancements in the technology.

I am looking forward to working and learning with you all.
