The candidates were Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Thomas Jefferson was representing the Democratic-Republican party and Aaron Burr was representing the Federalist party. Jefferson defeated Burr in this election, but Burr became his vice president. This was because they hadn’t established that when someone runs for president they have a running mate. Burr was very mad that Jefferson won the election and later threatened to succeed and buy the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson got mad about this and tried to arrest him, but John Marshall and SCOTUS found Burr not guilty of anything. Later, Burr went on to kill Alexander Hamilton.

He negotiated with the French, and bought the land and river for 15 million dollars. This now meant that they had to push the Native Americans even more West. This eventually led to more expansion and Manifest Destiny. Marbury, who was a federalist, sued James Madison for not serving in his commission for justice of the peace for Washington D.C. The Supreme Court ruled that although it was illegal for Madison to withhold the delivery of the appointments, forcing Madison to deliver the appointments was beyond the power of the U.S. Supreme Court. This case established judicial review which means that the Supreme Court has the power to declare federal laws unconstitutional. This increased the power of the Supreme Court and the power of the federal government.  This would then upset the democratic republicans, and support the federalists. The democratic republicans controlled most of the federal government at the time, but the SCOTUS was controlled by a federalist. During this time the French and the English were impressing American merchants. This meant that they were capturing them out at sea and forcing them to fight in their army. This upset Americans and led to Jefferson passing the Embargo Act. This stopped America from exporting to any country around the world. This meant that England and France couldn’t do business with America anymore. Although this seemed like a good idea, England and France imported from other countries and left America’s economy to fall. Jefferson then had to repeal this act.

The Embargo Act left America with a failing economy which Jefferson knew he had to fix. He repealed this act and passed the Non Intercourse Act. This said that America would stop exporting goods to only England and France. This meant that their economy could be built up again without impressment from England or France. But most of America’s economy came from England and France, so they still struggled. All of this led to Macon’s Bill #2. Macon’s Bill #2 was passed by James Madison, Jefferson’s right hand man.

Madison ran against Charles Pickney. Madison was representing the Democratic-Republicans and Pickney was representing the Federalists. Madison was considered as Jefferson’s “right hand man.” This meant that he did everything with Jefferson. Madison becoming president is showing that another Democratic-Republican was elected into office and the Federalists were losing. This was a foreshadow to the demise of the Federalist party. Madison had also been supporting Jefferson with the impressment problems.

Macon’s Bill #2 was passed by James Madison, Jefferson’s right hand man, in 1810. This followed the Non Intercourse Act. Because the Non Intercourse Act was hurting the economy so badly, Madison passed the Non Intercourse Act. Macon’s Bill #2 said that America would export to whoever would stop impressing their soldiers first. This then led to Napoleon's deception. Napoleon's deception was the French saying that they would stop impressing Americans, when in reality they wouldn’t. This was done so that Americans would export to France again. This was better for the American and the French economy.

Macon’s Bill #2 said that America would support France and stop exporting to England. This angered England, and increased tensions. Because of the rising tensions between America and England, the War of 1812 was near. This meant that America would have to fight for their independence again from England. They also again had the support from France, because of Macon’s Bill #2.

The war was between England and America. America was trying to export and England was impressing their merchants. The French were also doing this but they had agreed to stop and help America to fight England. This was important because it meant America was getting naval support. The war was neutral, and caused the two sides to come to a mutual agreement for them to go back to how they were before the war. This was known as America’s second war for independence. This is known as a win for America.

It was a peace treaty signed by both United Kingdom and United States representatives. It is called the Treaty of Ghent because the location in which it was signed was in Ghent, United Netherlands. This treaty ended any hope Great Britain may have had of reclaiming lost territory during the Revolutionary War. Any conquered territory was to be returned, according to the treaty, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada. Additionally, it ended wars with the Native Americans. There was an increased sense of national purpose and awareness. Farmers in western Pennsylvania protested against this. It was the first real test of federal authority in the US. The farmers thought the tax was unfair and extremely discriminatory. Washington personally led the United States militia westward to stop the rebels. Washington proved that the federal government had the strength to enforce its law. The rebellion proved that the new government had the right to levy any tax that could impact citizens in all states. America’s border extended to the Mississippi River; its southern area was in Spanish territory. Spanish officials kept the Mississippi River closed to American shipping. Also, both Spain and the U.S. claimed portions of what is now Alabama and Mississippi. Treaty between the U.S. and Spain which gave the U.S. the right to transport goods on the Mississippi river and to store goods in the Spanish port of New Orleans. Pinckney's Treaty encouraged and enabled Americans to continue expansion westward. The creation of the treaty reversed Spanish Politics and placed the U.S. in a strong position. It also allowed America to use New Orleans as a drop ship port.
