It’s hard to remember anything from when you were born. But, it’s easy to know the details. Hi, my name is Brecklyn Abbiatti and I was born on September 3rd, 2008 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin Missouri. I was born at 2:25 p.m. I was 8 days late, but a healthy baby. My mom unfortunately had two miscarriages before me and ended up having me at the age of 40. I’m so grateful to have the life I have now and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

The farm. My mom's parents own a farm down in Plato, Missouri. Yeah, you’re probably wondering where that is. To be honest, I can’t even tell you. It’s in the middle of nowhere. In 2011 my grandparents purchased the farm. I remember the first time we were shown the house. The stairs to the downstairs. The 12 steps. They had no carpet on them, just bare wood. We were kids so we were up and down, up and down, up and down those stairs as the adults did whatever adults do. Sooner or later…I got a splinter. But, not on my foot, which you think would make sense because it’s from the stairs, but it was actually in the web of my thumb and pointer finger. We all have done the bear run up the stairs. When your hands are on the steps in front of and you you crawl up the stairs as fast as you can. Don’t lie, I know you have done it too. I will never forget that splinter, but I am glad we finally got carpet on those stairs.

My two best friends. Cooper and Zach. We hung out every day, never a day missed. Our great-grandmas lived by each other and over time we slowly became friends. On my birthday that year, they gifted me a picture frame. This picture frame had pictures from my birthday. “Happy Birthday Brecklyn,” it says in the middle with a picture of me surrounded by memories from that day. Pictures of me holding Zach’s hand while Cooper is following. Me and Cooper are only a year apart, while me and Zach are 5 years apart. More pictures of the three of us having a great time walking down the gravel road our great-grandmas lived on. But, two years later, our great-grandmas died and we never saw each other again.

It was my birthday in pre-school. When everyone either brings cookies or cupcakes, but me? No. I brought cheese sticks. Yes, string cheese. I remember that day. It was towards the end of the day, my mom and dad came into the classroom with a tall rectangular cooler filled with string cheese. Every time I see or eat a cheese stick I always go back to that memory. But, cheese wasn’t the only highlight of my pre-school year. I made one of the best friends I could ever have imagined. Her name was Briley. We were inseparable. We did everything together. But, after my pre-school year ended I went to a different school while she stayed. We reunited in sixth grade and now we are just as close as we were back then. I’m so grateful for our friendship and that those cheese sticks brought us together.

Me and this girl have had beef with each other since the 1st grade. We hated each other, never got along, and always were each other’s competition for everything. In 3rd grade, we met our limit with each other. She was talking crap on me to one of my best friends at the time. He tattled-tailed because she quote on quote “was going to dominate me in basketball.” We were on the same team by the way. The teachers took it the wrong way and she got ISS in the third grade. I remember the day she got it. She got moved up to the fourth-grade lunch, but we were all confused about why. We were in 3rd grade we didn’t know what ISS was. But, it’s all good now. Adalee (she is the “girl”) and I are one of each other’s best friends and our elementary beef brought us closer together in the end.

Sooo you know how I mentioned those two boys back in 2012? Well, in 7th grade I had a hallway crush on this boy, named Cooper and he had a popular brother in High school. Named Zach. I knew this because they were popular, and word gets around. At that point, I forgot the names of the boys I hung out with every single day, sad but true. I tell my mom about this boy and his brother and she tells me who he is. I’m stunned, shocked, flabbergasted, and at a loss for words. I thought these two boys would never come back into my life. Cooper didn’t know who I was, but I knew him. I tried to get this boy's attention but it never worked, until it did. Flash Forward to 2023 almost two years later. December 2nd. I get a text from Cooper. He was asking ME to hang out. So of course, I said yes. He comes over to Shiloh’s house with some of his friends. We talk and talk and talk while everyone talks among themselves. That night changed everything. Also, spoiler alert we are dating now…

I have mentioned making friends in the past and then getting separated, and then coming back to each other in the end. But these two friends are different. We never got split up and we are still friends. Mia and Lillia. We met in kindergarten. We sat at the same table next to each other, and sat on the ABC rug together, coloring together. Us three, THE trio in kindergarten. But okay hear me out, lowkey if im going to be honest I was a bully to them. Every day at recess if they didn’t play tag with me I would make this huge deal about it and say they weren’t my friends, but in reality, they were my only friends. I’m so grateful that my pettiness didn’t break us apart over all these years and we never lost touch. I talk to them every day now and we are even in a bible study together.

Me, my grandma, my mom, and my cousins went to the movies. And before you get a vision of a super nice theater with a huge nice screen, huge seats, a whole variety of snacks, no. My grandparents kinda live in the middle of nowhere let me tell ya. She lives in Plato, Missouri, where I swear there are more cows than people. We went to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I have watched almost all of these movies and they never get old and neither do all the memories that theater has in my grandma's small town.

I got my precious dog Chopper on December 9th, 2016. He is my little pride and joy I don’t know what my life would be like without him. He is a small 6-pound Toy Yorkie and he is going to be 8 years old this year in October. He was my Christmas present that year and no other present has topped him. I had no clue that I was getting him that night. My dad’s friend from Kansas City picked him up and delivered him to us. I remember when we got him he had longer nails and they stuck to our carpet and it sounded like velcro. We called him Velcro until we got his nails cut. Bringing up this memory always makes me smile and makes me remember how grateful I am for him and how much I love him even when he annoys me sometimes.

I was in 5th grade, it was picture day. For some odd reason, I was drinking a hot vanilla cappuccino. I don’t even like hot coffee, but I guess I did in 5th grade. Right before getting out of my dad's truck, I spilled the coffee on my green shirt. I was so mad at myself. I texted my mom and told her about the terrible stain. The stain was right at the bottom of my shirt and maybe an inch wide and half an inch tall. Granted, most likely it wouldn’t even be noticeable in the picture but I was freaking out. My mom called the office because she is friends with one of the office workers and she helped me get the stain out. Who knew warm water and a paper towel could solve all your picture-day problems?

It was a two-day drive and on the second day, we went on this mountain-type thing. Super curvy roads that just went up and up and up. The views were immaculate. My mom was driving and she hates heights, so we were driving like 10 miles per hour, but it was worth seeing the views and honestly gave me more time to take in all the wonderful things around me.

Up till this point, I have been in classes with the same group of people since 1st grade, so starting Junior High was a terrifying thought. Not only did I have to go to a different school, meet all new teachers, and have the fear of getting lost in the back of my mind, but I also had to experience something I have only had to do in Kindergarten, meet new people. The first day of school was scary. Luckily for leadership, I got to see where all my classes were the week before, but that still didn’t prepare me for what else that day had in store for me. I would get used to the people in a class and then have to go to the next. I remember walking in the hallways sweating, red-faced, clinching my lunchbox, and being stomped all over by the weirdly tall kids. But, despite the scary first day I ended up loving my 7th grade year in the end and it actually helped me start to branch out.

At the moment it was a sad thought, but to be honest I do not miss it and I’m glad I chose softball. Volleyball has brought me many new friendships along the way and I will forever be grateful for that. My last year of volleyball was quite the experience. We were a good team and only lost one game all season. I was a setter for the B team. Another reason I could not wait for the season to end and not have to play ever again. Despite the fact that I don’t play anymore I still miss it sometimes.
