Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, played instrumental roles in transforming Dubai from a small trading port into a global metropolis. Their visionary leadership and collaborative efforts were crucial in shaping the modern UAE. In the 1960s, as oil revenues began to flow into the region, both leaders recognized the need for diversification and modernization. On Thursday, December 2nd, 1971, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan brought the emirates together, establishing the groundwork for the UAE's prosperity. Our country was revolutionized by Sheikh Rashid's desire to establish Dubai as a global center and Sheikh Zayed's vision of sustainability and progress. 🇦🇪

Golden dunes like oceans gleam,
A timeless tale, a boundless dream.
Oasis springs in arid lands,
Life awakened by human hands.

Skyscrapers pierce the azure sky,
A testament to reaching high.
From Burj Khalifa's lofty view,

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum were not just leaders—they were fathers to a nation, visionaries who believed that greatness was possible, even in the harshest conditions of the desert. They took a land of scattered tribes a and separated Emirates  and turned it into a symbol of unity, prosperity, and hope for millions. Their dream was not just for the present, but for generations to come, and today, we live in the glow of their achievements and it makes the UAE what it is today.

Sheikh Zayed, the Founding father of the nation (رحمه الله) taught us that true leadership lies in humility. He once said,
"الثروة الحقيقية ليست ثروة المال، بل هي ثروة الرجال، ولا فائدة في المال إذا لم يُسخر لصالح الشعب."

His actions reflected his words. He built schools where there was once only sand, planted forests in barren deserts, and ensured every citizen had access to the opportunities they deserved. His vision was rooted in peace, sustainability, and an unwavering belief in the power of unity.

Sheikh Rashid, brother in Islam and in this journey, embodied ambition and determination. Where others saw limitations, he saw potential. Dubai, under his leadership, transformed from a small coastal town to a global powerhouse. His ability to look to the future while honoring the past gave the UAE its balance—a respect for tradition paired with the courage to innovate. He envisioned a city that would bring the world to our shores and succeeded beyond imagination. 🌆📈

Together, these two great men achieved what many thought impossible. They united a fragmented region, built a thriving economy, and gave the world a model of what leadership, collaboration, and resilience could achieve. They gave us a nation we are proud to call home—a land where culture and modernity coexist, where ambition has no limits, and where every citizen stands tall.

Their legacy is not just found in skyscrapers or monuments, but in the hearts of every Emirati and citizen in this country. It’s in the pride we feel when we see the UAE flag waving high, the gratitude we carry when we walk through streets safely without any problems and the determination we share to honor their dream by building an even brighter future. But, let us never forget the sacrifices they made, the challenges they overcame, and the unity they inspired. Let us continue their work by keeping their values alive: compassion, ambition, and above all, love for this great nation. ❤️🇦🇪

Sheikh Rashid, was asked about the future of his country. He replied, "My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I ride a Mercedes, my son rides a Land Rover, and my grandson is going to ride a Land Rover…but my great-grandson is going to have to ride a camel again."

Today, we honor them not just as leaders, but as legends. Their vision will echo through history, and their story will forever inspire us to dream big, work hard, and always remain united.

SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN

The late founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan aspired to build a mosque personifying the moderation of Islam. This vision became a reality with the construction of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and a prominent landmark in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi. The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi as its capital, located in the Western Asia on the Eastern Coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The seven emirates are: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

Known as the Father of the Nation for his role in forming the United Arab Emirates, the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE. He served in this position since the formation of the UAE on 2 December 1971 until he passed away in 2004. Zayed was born at Qasr al-Hosn, Abu Dhabi, in 1918 and moved from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain in 1926, after the death of his father. As Zayed was growing up in Al-Ain, there were no modern schools anywhere along the coast. He revised local water ownership rights to ensure a more equitable distribution, which led to agricultural development and re-establishment of the oasis as the predominant market center. His city planning in Al Ain helped ensure that today, the city is one of the greenest in Arabia. He wasn't an ordinary personality. He was very sincere and wise. Everyone could feel his honest wish to live and let live. He focused on his own country providing the right platform to transform it into an economic powerhouse and an advanced and a successful nation.

In honour of our late Founding Father of the UAE, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, 2018 has been announced as the ‘Year of Zayed’ as to commemorate the achievements of the creator of the UAE. 

2018 will mark 100 years since the birth of HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and thus in honour of what shall be a great year, here are ten facts about our founding father that you probably didn’t know about. One foundation of his philosophy as a leader and statesman was that the resources of the country should be fully used to the benefit of the people, including the women of the UAE who benefited of his vision of education, employment and equality. Sheikh Zayed achieved unification through patience and consultation. He prioritized bringing all stakeholders to consensus over authoritarian tactics. This inclusive approach strengthened when establishing national institutions like the Federal National Council to formally represent public voices.

As the country’s ruler, Sheikh Zayed introduced a formal government structure with departments developed to handle specific tasks. He assigned public officials to build basic housing facilities, schools, health services, and the construction of an airport, seaport, roads, and a bridge to link Abu Dhabi to the mainland. Additional financial resources were also spent on planting trees in Al Ain in order to transform Abu Dhabi into a green city. Sheik Zayed was the first statesman to call for a union. He quickly realized that for Abu Dhabi to prosper, it needed to cooperate with its tribal neighbors.

His first step was to meet with the then-ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The meeting was held on February 19, 1968, at Samih, where the idea of a united Arab nation under one flag was discussed. This was followed by an agreement signed on February 27, 1968, which would form a federation of nine emirates (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Bahrain, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Qatar and Umm al-Quwain). Eventually, on December 2, 1971, a federation of six emirates (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah, Umm al-Quwain) formed the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed was elected president and Sheikh Rashid was elected vice-president. Shortly afterward, on February 11, 1972, Ras Al Khaimah officially joined the federation.

In my opinion, I think that he was an amazing leader and father to his family because of the changes he made along the way. Not only did he inspire but he created a better life for those in need. He will be remembered for now and forever. I hope this earns me a spot for one of the best descriptions and stories of the leader.
