The modern museum was designed in 1997 by Daniel Libeskind and an estimated 350,000 people attend annually. With seasonal attractions and a variety of interactive exhibits, the museum aims to promote a realistic perspective of the wars of the 20th century, focusing on civilian life as well as the evolution of warfare to the modern day conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Personal connections and familial ties seems to be a driving factor in yearly attendance. One attendee explained that his son was enlisted in the army, whilst he himself had completed national service before it was phased out during the 1960s. It appeared that both men's fascination and experiences with conflict, however different, seemed to evoke emotion and connection. Despite the gloomy atmosphere the architecture and surround sound creates, the primary exhibits proves to be a popular and immersive experience for those tied to it.  

In addition to this, volunteers and workers at the museum cited that school children are also frequent visitors upon the Quays. Students from the Bunbury Aldersey Primary School were present on Wednesday morning, with a local teacher encouraging the young children to "start to discuss ancestors" as older generations are said to avoid talking about the various conflicts with their descendants.

However, despite the inviting nature of the primary exhibits, some have argued that a trip to the museum is a one time only event, and little is on offer to entice returning visitors: of those interviewed, many believed that the awkward location on the Quays limited accessibility and its appeal, whilst the lack of modern renovation and rare seasonal exhibits provide little to no incentive for return.

As the anniversary of the November armistice approaches and the 'Poppies: Wave' exhibit still captures national attention and coverage, we can hope the Imperial War museum can still continue to fulfil its purpose in conveying that  “War shapes lives” and despite its inauspicious popularity, the museum still has the right to exist as a significant and monumental piece of British history.
