The Court ruled unanimously that a law banning polygamy was constitutional, and did not infringe upon individuals' First Amendment right to free exercise of religion. The Court stated that you may believe in polygamy, but prohibiting the practice of polygamy is constitutional.

Stephen J. Roy, Karen Miller and their daughter Little Bird of Snow, were residents of Pennsylvania who were recieving Food Stamps. The family argued and refused to get a social security number for their daughter Little Bird. Arguing that a Social Security number violates their Native American religious beliefs. They were not allowed to receive any welfare without the Social Security number. The Supreme Court decided that the Social Security requirement did not violate the First Amendment due to the general neutrality of a Social Security number. This case is pivotal because it establishes that Social Security and other programs are neutral and do not infringe on any religious right.

Thomas Van Orden sued Texas in federal district court, arguing a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the state capitol building represented an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. Orden argued this violated the First Amendment's establishment clause, which prohibits the government from passing laws "respecting an establishment of religion." In 5-4 decision, the Court held that the establishment clause did not bar the monument on the grounds of Texas' state capitol building. The argument for this was that the monument was generally secular, and not tied to a specific religion.

1) In the cakeshop case in Colorado, we see that the first amendment right of free exercise of religion might result in problems with gay rights. It will be interesting to see which sets precedent, because gay rights is a strong movement but the the right of free religion is the first thing stated in our Bill of Rights, and was obviously seen as important by our founding fathers.
2) We have also seen ongoing issues of separation of church and state in schools. Many schools have tried to hold religious prayers before games or schools, and I am sure more cases will pop up about whether those prayers are constitutional. Even events at Arapahoe might cross a constitutional line at times.
