Our PWD, Our Pride (Featuring Local Personality with Special Needs)

The lady in the picture is my neighbor and a friend too. Her name is Mary Katelyn and everyone in our baranggay calls her “Ekit”. Ekit looked so young for her age, she’s 13 and already in her puberty. Everyone here in our place knew that Ekit is uniquely different from other kids, and we completely understand that she needs special attention and understanding. Although Ekit has “autism”, but her condition doesn’t made her stop doing the things she love and how she like to live her life. During her younger days, she cannot speak nor comprehend things and throwing tantrums everyday became normal to her. As time goes by, she learned to socialize with the other kids and she even went to school daily. Ekit’s parents are thankful for the teachers in our school that they let her enter classrooms and even attend to Ekit’s concerns and curiosity. Our teachers gave their willingness to atleast teach Ekit basic learning that will surely have a great impact to her life in the future. Their inclusivity have been a foundation to what is Ekit today— she learned to speak not that well but can really communicate and she have better understanding now. Ekit may not have reach big accomplishments like the other person with disabilities but we are glad to witness the improvement in her life despite of her condition. We are really rooting for Ekit and praying that one day we will get to see her enjoying big accomplishments. What I learned from the story of Ekit is that improvement and change depends on us, it does not depend on the hands of the other people. Improvement is not impossible for those who really work for it despite of the situation and the condition.

Feelings:

Folden’s journey left me feeling deeply inspired and touched. Even though he faced ridicule, he remained steadfast and pursued his passion. His story highlights that inner strength and belief in oneself are far more important than physical appearance.

Learnings:

This story taught me that true success isn’t measured by how we look or how others perceive us, but by our perseverance and confidence. Challenges and failures aren’t signs to stop, but experiences that shape and strengthen us. With determination, courage, and resilience, even the most impossible dreams can become reality.

I came to understand that the most powerful voice is the one that comes from within. Folden’s path revealed that real talent lies not in flawlessness, but in sincere effort and passion. True beauty and strength are shown through the ability to face and rise above difficulties. Everyone has a voice worth hearing, and what truly matters is the courage to let it be heard.
