Many things gave rise to the French Revolution. One thing was that France was in terrible debt. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette spent so much. Louis borrowed heavily from previous kings and his queen spent money on gowns, jewels, gambling, and gifts. Louis paid little attention to his government advisers. The rise of bread increased and women rioted. Louis also tried to escape from Paris. The third estate believed in equality, liberty, and democracy.

The social contract originated during the Enlightenment it was an agreement between Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau. The Old Regime was a system in France before the Revolution. King Louis XVI was the king of France. He was a terrible king and France had many problems because of him. The Natural Rights are rights under natural law. They are unalienable rights meaning that the government cannot take away and your are born having them. The Tennis Court Oath was a pledge made by the National Assembly. They were locked out of their meeting room so they broke down an indoor tennis court and pledged to stay there until they had drawn up a constitution.
