Period 1: Let's Plan a Zoo: the cost of decisions by Jason Costello

Consider the following questions and then formulate a short response to two to three of the questions (definitely want to respond to #4): Did every animal make it into your zoo? If not, explain why some were included and others were not.Did you add another animal to your zoo? Would you want to have a zoo with just one animal (multiple enclosures)? What was the last animal in and out of your zoo? Why? What was the determining factor of inclusion or exclusion? Now think, what is the point of this activity? It is not to dream about owning a zoo, there is a economic concept to analyze.

Not every animal made it into our zoo. We only have six kinds of animals spread across the 20 acres to make ample room for walkways, gift shops, and restaurants. Due to this lack of space, we couldn't have as many animals as were available.

The last animal in and out of our zoo was the giraffe. It was easily the biggest in our zoo and needed the most space. It was also exotic enough to be an attraction.

The determining factors for inclusion and exclusion were space, cost, and novelty. We want people to come to our zoo, but we don't want to lose profit, or be crowded by too many exhibits.

We included animals like giraffes that guests could interact with by feeding them.

We included a cheetah first because it is a very popular animal in many zoos, and we included a kangaroo last because it is unique and less common in zoos. Both animals do not take up much acreage.

A zoo with just one animal would only appeal to a small group of people, therefore not generating much profit. People likely want to go to a zoo to see multiple animals that they can't see in the wild, and one singular animal would give the guests less to do.

Not every animal fits into our zoo because when we decided on some food options such as the food trucks and attraction which was the roller coaster. We also valued certain animals a lot more than others.

The determining factor of inclusion was what animals would best go together in the same region and what animals would best be able to stand alone as an attraction to draw in customers.

The last animal in our zoo was Hippo. We needed one more animal to fill up our zoo so we went with the Hippo. The Hippo was also a great option for the back of our zoo. The last animal out was the penguins. Since both the penguin and the hippo take up the same amount of space we went with the animal that we thought would draw in as many customers as possible. So that's why we had to cut the penguin.

#1. No, every animal did not make it into our zoo because we simply do not have enough space to place all of the animals. Additionally, for the zoo to make revenue, we needed space for gift shops, food, walkways, and more. We chose our animals carefully, such as choosing a lion, because they will attract more customers.

#4. Our last animal was birds. We created a bird enclosure because it is easy to maintain and create a variety of different birds. The last animal out was the aquarium because it took up too much space and was not a smart investment, as it required much different care than the rest of the animals.

#3. We would not love to have a zoo with only one animal, as a zoo with only one animal would become increasingly boring as you move throughout the enclosures. With no diversity, people will not be attracted to the contents of the zoo.
